Our state societies annual golf outing and picnic is coming up shortly.
Yesterday, I got a call from the president of our organization about helping out with some of the fun events that are usually done (i.e. pacing contest, timed instrument set-up, etc...)
What are some of the interesting events your groups have done that I might incorporate into our activities?
traverse with a compass and pacing was fun at our rendezvous. Just a short three sided traverse.
You could put some goodies around and have them found using handheld gps units.
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. Typing class 9th grade!

Oh yeah, fastest setup with a transit on stiff legs with a plumb bob!
> Fastest setup of tripod with tribrach.
Leica sponsored a contest like about 10 years ago at our annual meeting. The participant had to start the stopwatch, set it down on a table, move about 5 feet, grab a tripod with tribrach, move that a couple feet and center it over a dime on the floor with the tribrach level bubble completely centered, and the crosshairs touching the dime, and then grab the stopwatch and stop it. The winning time by yours truly, was 12 seconds. The prize Leica gave away: a 19" TV. Its still around here with a video game box hooked to it.
At one of our summer meetings, we had an old vernier transit set up. The goal was to see who could turn closest to the known angle to two fixed targets. There were a number of people that were WAY off...just didn't know how to read a vernier. A magnifying glass was provided! Fun!
The "Cone Toss": see who can flip the most cones upright onto a goat stake.
The "Plumb Bob Toad Stab": PETA may not like this one. (They didn't even like my First Annual PETA Bar-B-Q)
The "Rod Level": see who can balance a Philly rod and make it stand alone the longest.
add a monument with special seal to the location with a 4+ hour static observation
Wing-dings
That would be without a gammon reel and zero'd on a back site to make it more interesting.
Back when I was young, I always wanted to prove how much better my crew was by having to drive, say, 10 hubs and lath, written up and at a certain accuracy.
If you could set up a side by side contest, maybe 5 teams to a heat or something, with fastest going on, and fastest losing team advancing...the side by side thing would at least be exciting.
what about a chain throw and bundling contest. throw for distance and bundle for time
