I saw this photograph posted on a subreddit (r/surveying) and made a comment. An email from the original poster claimed harassment. Obviously there is no serious value to anything posted there. My comment was that if he were my employee I would fire him, not photograph him.

Historic boundaries and conservation efforts.
reddit is a jungle, with no entry qualifications, low expectations for quality posts, and minimal supervision. Also confusing as it sticks things in that are not part of the selected discussion.
Makes you appreciate Surveyorconnect.
Definitely stupid, especially that post, wow. I'd be furious with an empolyee over this as well. I've been on/off on reddit over the years, that sub should probably just be called r/surveytechmemes at this point lol. Definitely not a forum I would go to for thoughtful professional discourse. I do occasionally see some quality content on there though, pictures of neat old equipment or like a recent reminder about the terminalia holiday. I think its especially valuable/ approachable in some of the posts from folks interested about entering the profession or technical questions from the public.
Even throwing the tripod in the back and holding the ts in his lap would be better than that and not take any real extra time. Especially with no cap on the truck.?ÿ
Really how much time does it take to put it in the case though.?ÿ
Hmmm maybe it was a "posed for the pic" situation?
No telling for sure. But, there are definitely people who would treat an inst just like that.

It doesn't take much.?ÿ It's not a GNSS system, it's not like he drives from point to point, hopping out for 2 minutes doing RTK, and hopping back in.?ÿ He's going to take at least 5 or 10 minutes (likely a lot longer, as I don't have much confidence in this individual's ability at this point) so why not take the 10 seconds to put it in the protective case (and 10 seconds to take it out.)?ÿ The cost of the instrument and repairs is only one part.?ÿ I worry about the potential for poor data collection when the instrument takes a hit, and the technician looks at it and says "well I don't see anything broken so it must be fine" and goes about their day as normal and does not say anything. ?ÿ?ÿ

I know a surveyor who would fire him on the spot.?ÿ Personally, I would not be happy to see this, and even if it's just a lapse in judgment, it shows a lack of concern for the expense of repairs, the value of the equipment, and the quality of work that is required of the equipment.?ÿ Care should be taken.

- 2022!? I had to look it up and indeed, another of my influences has gone on to his reward. I was a big fan of the?ÿNational Lampoon in high school and especially the articles of O'Rourke and Chris Miller. I attribute PJ's outrageously funny book Holidays?ÿin Hell to a breakup with an old flame when we visited Epcot Center in 1990. My nonstop quoting of snarky excerpts from Holidays at every ride/exhibit broke that camel's back. Thank you for that Mr. O'Rourke.
Addressing today's generation about the baby boomers he wrote:
??My generation spoiled everything for you. It has always been the prerogative of young people to look and act weird and shock grownups. But my generation exhausted the earth??s resources of the weird... all you had left was to tattoo your faces and pierce your tongues. Ouch. That must have hurt. I apologize.?
Rest easy in hell P.J.?ÿ

That was also posted on a facebook page and a lot of folks expressed the same sentiments as you.
All I could think of is "fire the supervisor of that crew". If they were released into the wild not knowing that they were committing a cardinal sin then the finger points back at their boss who should have, on the very first day of their employment, explained the whys and wherefores of proper equipment care. And then it should have been reiterated the next day and the next ad nauseum.?ÿ
