Reading old USGS level notes

Can anyone explain how the format of these USGS notes work? Primarily the numbers on the left side?ÿ of the notes page. I appreciate any other tips or tricks that might help to better understand them.?ÿ

I think the first two numbers are some kind of internal BS. I never found a use for them. Third number is distance from initial mark or start of the line.

I believe the first column is the field book and the second column is the page, I found this in a manual...
