I need some help with trying to download a first series Ranger DC using the serial port connection on the DC to the usb port on the computer. I have installed the needed drivers and the DC still isn't being recognized. I have searched through some of the old posts on how to do it and I still am not having any success. Any help would be appreciated.

How are you trying to connect to the 200T?

If I remember correctly the 200 series needs to connect directly with a download program utilizing the kermit protocol (TDS, Carlson, Kermit 95). ActiveSync and Windows Mobile Device Center do not work with the older models.

If you are connecting with a 9-pin serial cable, is it the one that came with the Ranger? If not, you must be certain that the cable you are using is a "null modem" cable. If it is not a null-modem cable it will never work.

If all you have is a standard modem cable, then you may be able to find a null modem gender changer at an electronics store...

I've found its often easier just to install a serial port on your computer. I added one on mine to work with my GPS units. The people that sold us the equipment said that was easier than trying to mess with a USB port. The card to add a serial port was less than 10 dollars and took about 15 minutes to install.

I was looking at the data collector again this evening and had more questions. I installed a driver when I purchased the serial to usb cable. I am trying to download the data collector into Carlson 2004. When I am in data transfer, the cable's port is listed a com3 on the computer and in the ranger I only have choices of com1 and com2. Is the port being listed as com3, is what is causing the data not being able to transfer? If that is the case, is there a way I can change the usb port to com1 or 2.

The COM port on the data collector that is the 9-pin port is COM1. The data collector is only asking you which port you want to use on the collector. COM2 on a Ranger 200T is the 25-pin port.

The computer is telling you which COM port on the PC that the system assigned the USB to serial adapter to use. And yes, that can be changed under the "Advanced" port settings. But it should not be a problem as long as the program you are downloading to/with on the PC recognizes that port. And do not feel like the Lone Ranger. This is a common source of misunderstanding.

As a point of curiosity, what software are you trying to download to? Foresight DXM? Survey Link?

Not all USB to serial adaptors are equal. Early on whether a model worked was hit or miss, so another adaptor may actually work under the same conditions.

Went through the buy and try, repeat routine quite a few years ago.

Does anyone have Terramodel locks for sale? Do you have any Foresight or Foresight DXM locks you'd be willing to part with? Thanks.
