Has anyone had any success in getting their TDS Ranger 200 to communicate with Windows 7 operating system? I'm still using an old XP to transfer the files. PITA.

Windows Mobile Device Center replaced Activesync as the communication handler. I have had users make this connection work without too much hair pulling or eye gouging.

JB,

I download frequently using the USB adapter into Vista using Windows Mobile Center.

I looked for an item number on the Hayes website, but could not find it.

The adapter plugs into the larger port of the Ranger. I have had to make sure that the Ranger is not in TDS when I plug it up.

I hope this helps.

Jimmy

Thanks, Jimmy.

I saw your earlier post and also couldn't find the adapter at Hayes. What does that adapter look like? What connections does it have?

I've got a Serial>USB cable that worked on XP and updated the drivers. You're right about exiting the TDS program before attempting to connect.

I've gotten it to [almost] connect and actually had it talking for a couple of file transfers, then no-go. Hasn't wanted to reconnect yet.

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately, we can't get that adapter anymore. Serial will be the only other way to go. Try changing the baud rate on the Ranger to 57600 for Activesync.

There are serial to usb adapters still available (let me guess, there is a specialty connector on one end)

Thanks for the responses. The suggestions and a bit of persistence seems to have paid off.

I throttled the serial>usb adapter to 57600 using the Windows Device Manager; that seems to have brought a bit more stability to the connection.

I am able to connect (after several attempts and modifying the connection settings by turning com4 off, then on, between connections.

I've got pretty good success using File Commander to sync the data collector directory with the hard drive directory, but the connection seems to get lost after a while. Not sure why it seems to time out.

Still not a seamless operation, but considering that I'm expecting a Windows CE device to talk to a Windows operating system, using Windows communications software, any success is better than none. You'd think ... :-X

I either need to find a connector like Jimmy's, or I need to find a 500X on the market for a good price.

Thanks again.

You mention turning off com 4.....is that on the windows or ranger side? I used WinXP with LDD2i and a Husky FS2 for a decade. As I upgraded to new machines and new service packs for WinXP I noticed it became more difficult to download jobs without having to retry several times. Eventually this culminated in not being able to connect at all. The solution was to disable then re-enable the com port on the WinXP side prior to making the connection. That seems to bypass whatever Windows is doing in the background that makes serial connections difficult to impossible with legacy equipment.

It's on the Windows Device Manager settings (or ActiveStync for XP). I had the same issues (struggles) getting the legacy equipment to link up. I purchased a different serial>USB adapter by Sewell that worked quite well in XP. My Belkin adapter just got worse with each patch/update until it wasn't worth the fight.

I have one a Ranger USB Adapter

Thanks, Dylan!! I'll try anything at this point. Hopefully a USB>USB connection will communicate a lot better.

You can find the adapter at $#@%!

That is a little high on price. I believe I paid about $25 for one from here .

The proper name is ranger 26-pin multiadaper. I have no issues using that with Win7

I have one a Ranger USB Adapter

Thanks, Dylan!

I received the adapter in the mail last night. Hooked it up and it auto-installed and linked right up. Did have to practically tear the office apart looking for a Type A USB connector cable, but finally found one. I can drag-drop files, sync directories and everything. No fuss - no muss!
