R12 set up as Base

It shouldn't be an update issue. Attached is setup guide for using the R12 as an NTRIP caster for a DJI M350 RTK. Ignoring the DJI, double check that you've setup the R12 correctly. More than likely you missed some small detail.

I don't know about an R12, but the last receiver I purchased was an R750. The basic receiver was only $1989, but base and rover mode added $13775 to the price. It may be that the R12 you have is not enabled for base mode.

If you go into the web interface of the receiver, select receiver status and then receiver options, then option detail. It should be listed there,

Looks like I don't have access to base options on the R12. there doesn't seem to be an option to activate on webUi, is it a call to the dealer to activate?

I was wrong to assume base options came with the R12!

We use our R12 R10 R12is all base and rover. So if we are attacking a job i might have two rovers going in opposite directions and when one gets to a point set it up as a base and then the other base and rover hits the points again saves time logistically sometimes in a jam especially when maneuvering around a site with lots of traffic. I have no idea why your R12 cannot operate as a base. I thought they all could go either way. I knew about the R750 being a base only option as i was looking at one on a specific job that we might set up semi permanent and just leave on a job so i can use our r12 and R10 as rovers when we send crews to do asbuilts etc. it a job that its the perfect scenario for just rtk base an rover on And logistics around the site is no fun so best to just let them have at it and go.

Any of the newer Trimble receivers can function as a static only basic receiver. Base and rover functionality can be added at a substantial cost. To enable the receiver to function in base mode, you would need to contact a dealer, pay the upgrade cost, and they will give you a code to enter in to the receiver to activate it.

So Trimble sells the receivers fully functional, you just pay for features that area activated by codes. I have never ordered a receiver that was not base/rover.

I don't remember seeing any static-only receivers at all in stock, across multiple offices in multiple states, when I was working at a dealer. I'm sure the margins are much lower on them, and knowing that dealer they were just making the decision to only sell what was going to make them decent margins.

I'd go so far as to say that there are probably a lot of salespeople for Trimble that do not know it is possible to turn those options on/off...they just parrot the line that "it only comes with full base/rover capabilities".

@john-hamilton How do you like the R750. We were looking at one for an ongoing project to set up semi permanent. To save some time over the next year or so.

No complaints. I bought it because the R10's I had been using for base receivers had older modems that were no longer supported. We do most of our RTK obs over cell except for very close by.

The R750 has a sim card slot (verizon won't work, must be AT&T, T-Mobile, or Google Fi). I wish it had an external antenna connector for the cell modem, but it seems to work pretty well with the internal antenna.

I don't remember if it is available with an internal radio but mine does not have one, it works fine using a TDL 450 external radio.

Yeah we were looking at that same capability and we got a quote also for a radio as well. I figured i could just set a post and cabinet we got power close by and just let it run 24/7. Once project is done i would incorporate it into another base rover kit. We have r10 and r12s r12i. So I figured if i have two potential rovers running on this one project we could truly cover some ground. Are you using the large geodetic zepher or the small zepher

I have both, depends on the situation. If setting up a base locally, I use the Zephyr BASE antenna. If traveling somewhere more distant by plane, I might use the rover 3cmodel. I recently found out that the Zephyr Geodetic 2 also can track all four constellations, I thought it could only do GPS and Glonass.

@john-hamilton yeah when i got my rough quote they had the zepher geo 2 in it for that very reason full gnss. We would probably use the uhf radio most of the time. But i need to run the numbers of it against a regular r12 base and see the cost. If its substantial then its a no brainer to have something like that as part of the tool box. I feel like we are going back to the cable days lol. But I usually am within a couple miles so the 2 watt radios are perfect for us no latency to deal with etc.
