One of the fun parts of what we do is trying to solve puzzles.?ÿ In my case the first part of a small town had only five blocks with two streets and alleys where they should be.?ÿ A bit later they added?ÿ another block and a half plus a street and alleys.?ÿ Then the fun begins.?ÿ Metes and bounds pieces tacked on by commencing at a certain lot/block corner, thence 15 feet across an alley to the POB of whatever sized tract.?ÿ It would have helped if the addition had been labeled correctly.?ÿ What says 140 feet should read 150 feet, for example.
One of the exasperating parts of what we do is attempting to explain to property owners how we resolved the puzzle.
What alley??ÿ I don't see no stinking alley.?ÿ What street??ÿ I don't see no stinking street.

I always tell people that doing a survey is like putting together a puzzle. We hope for the little kids puzzle that is four corners pieces and that's it, sadly sometimes what we get is a puzzle made by a blind chimpanzee whose only tools are rage and dynamite.?ÿ

One of the most confusing surveys I've ever worked on involved an alley and a poorly or mislabeled plat.
Copy of 1890 plat read 60' of R/W for a particular street...where of course there was no stinking street.?ÿ On the opposite side of the 'street' from my client's lots was a old rusty pipe block corner.?ÿ OK 60' east of there is where my client's property starts.?ÿ Then I work my way around the parcel and I'm finding pins...but they are all 20' east of where I think they should be...at an alley.?ÿ And BTW the alley is 20' in width.?ÿ It's like someone moved the alley 20' east.
Screwed me up for a while.?ÿ I scratched a sore on the top of my head.?ÿ A visit to the courthouse and I laid my eyes on the REAL plat (quill pen ink on goatskin)..and not the dolled up version prepared by an abstract company years ago.
The original plat had 80' wide streets.?ÿ The dolled up version read 60'.?ÿ I will admit the messy inked '80' was a little hard to read and did look like a '60' if you squinted.?ÿ
