Does anyone know where I can purchase the plastic canister that the prism goes in for a CST/Berger single fixed prism? I have used Hayes Inst. in the past, but I was told by the salesman this morning that it would be just as cheap to purchase the canister AND prism. I asked if he was trying to tell me that the little piece of plastic by itself would be close to $88, and he told me "Yea, or you can buy the prism and they will throw in the plastic for free.". I am really skeptic that you can not purchase the canister for less than the cost of the canister and prism.

Give me the dimensions and I can throw a design onto Shapeways ...

They can even print in gold!!! LOL

A number of years ago, I had some machined for Geodimeter prisms that kept breaking their plastic housing. Many times when the housing would break there would also be an internal glass fracture that would limit their range. Most of the time these limitations did not prove to be very great, except for extreme cases. I still have these somewhere, at least four or five still left along with some aluminum battery holders we were making. Those were very cool.

OK, I have in my mind a kind of nylon web exo-skeleton to limit material (cost) and obtain maximum protection. I am thinking that with a crush zone you could protect the glass better and have something extremely unique. One of my shift knobs got me thinking in this direction.

The printed knob is in the center of course with the stock Ariel Atom knob on the right and my lit one on the left. It has proven to be exceptionally strong and threaded very well.

Of course a solid stock like look could be easily done. It would be more expensive due to material printed just to give it the normal look and it would have no shock absorption from the native flexibility of nylon.

That's my wacky idea ...
