Can anyone recommend a good printer?
I've been using a HP7000 OfficeJet wide format for everything, but I'm thinking about getting a laser printer to handle legal and letter printing. Plus, I'd like to replace my "All-in-one" that I currently just use for faxing and scanning.
The more features, the better, but the basics I'm looking for are:
- Color Laser
- Faxing/Scanning
- 2 Paper Trays (Up to legal size)
- Not a PITA to setup for AutoCAD (I've found my HP7000 doesn't handle AutoCAD well - margin issues)
-Would like something with a scan to PDF option, but that's not required.
For the office, after having some part of several all-in-ones breaking ever year or so, I went with a stand- alone commercial scanner, and a Xerox Phaser color printer( up to 11x17 prints) the toner cartridges are pretty expensive but they seem to last forever. The fax machine is in the corner next to the answering machine and pager collecting dust.
If because of space or whatever reason you really want a all-in-one I have an HP Photosmart E Printer for the house, it does not have a fax but you can scan and it will connect wirelessly to your network and you can send it an email and it will print it out, you can also print to it from an Ipad.
I am a little reluctant to recommend an HP product because for the last few years seems everything I bought from them has been crap but this printer how worked well so far.
I bought a Brother MFC 6490CW a while back and love it so far. It's an all-in-one and takes paper up to 11X17.
I think that's an inkjet, rather than laser. I really want my next printer to be a laser. I've been looking at the Brother printers, though, they seem to have the best user reviews on Amazon.
TPR check out the prices of manufacturer's ink first,as
these machines are much cheaper these days, but their ink replacement cartridges are more expensive than gold.

I came across this review on cnet.com.

The 6490cw is my recommendation. Been using mine now for several years. Many great features. Yes, it's inkjet, but, spend a bit more on quality paper, and you'll get a quality product without the cost of laser.
You can save HUGE amounts on the ink by using the sites recommended in [msg=71197]this thread[/msg].

I ditto JB's recommendation. I just got a Brother MFC-6890CDW and it handles up to 11"x17" scan to .tif or .pdf and print. It is also wireless and was simple to hookup. Laser Jet color multi function is going to cost you considerable bigger bucks.

Permit me to be the voice of decent. Several folks have suggested the Brother 6490. I have one of those on my desk and it is a fine printer. The scanner works well as do the other functions. But, the quality does not rival that of a laser printer. It is and always will be an inkjet printer. IF that is what you want, fine. Just know up front that is what you get.
I also have had a couple of different Dell Color Laser printers. If you are going to use this printer to prepare Professional Reports including photographs and fancy graphics I highly recommend a true color laser. They will cost probably 2.5 times what the 6490 costs. The ink will be expensive.
But if you need/want high quality or high volume that is the way to go.

That's why they invented Kinko's. When I want it done in color laser, I upload the files and pick them up in an hour.
Of course, I don't need high volume.

My Brother MFC - 6490cw is still working great for me after one year.
Not a laser, but only about $200+.
I like the software also.
I don't think that they have the 6490 anymore. The last time I was in Staples, there was a newer all-in-one unit and not a 6490 anywhere in the displays. I have been using an HP R80 OfficeJet since October 1999 and have only had to replace the belt about a year and a half ago. Has really been a workhorse, I have pondered about the 6490 for the past two years about getting one for when the R80 dies, but have heard the the unit is an ink hog. The 11"x17" size sure would be a nice feature to have though for scans and prints.
