Just received a box of equipment to keep me working in the post-electricity, no gps, "general breakdown of civilization" world after December 21st. I'm telling the crews to plan to be at work after the Christmas Holiday because I've got clamping handles, a new-in-box 200 foot chain, chaining pins with holster and belt loop, and psychrometer.

I'll have none of that "why are we working, the total station battery is dead" or "who needs a survey anyway and the gps satellites all fell out of the sky" talk.

Now I just need to ammo up.

Thanks, Jeff Opperman for handling the transaction. You still got a lot of good stuff left? Let me know when the eBay auctions start.

I really hope this does not happen. It would really mess up my duck season...

You know the rules - PICS OR IT NEVER HAPPENED

Screw surveying after the apocalypse, I'm going to be a pirate and purveyor of fine contraband.

yeah without rule of law why would you need surveying

yeah, I'm thinking the only survey gear you'd need out of the truck in that world is the machete and the shovel to bury the bodies.

Hey, y'all are ruining my rationalization for buying this cool gear.

I'm not sure why I bought the Tycos psychrometer. Is humidity necessary to know for chaining corrections? I thought the chain only cares what the actual tempature is. I found the relative humidity tables (published 1918) on the interweb, but nowhere in my surveying books do I see when a sling psychrometer is needed.

If I'm going to use this thing, then I also need some cloth wicks or figure out how to rig up some cotton balls for the wet bulb.

I will try to post pictures later. Neat stuff for sure.

You need humidity number to do the fine corrections on astronomical refraction.

This reminds me of something very funny, albeit it wasn't at the time. I, as an freshly turned 18 year old, on a friday, thought at 11 a.m., why shouldn't we make it an early day. So the chief tells me, lets go eat lunch, so I left the battery on (on purpose) in the GTS 2B for about an hour. We go to start the next job, and sorry chief but the battery is dead. I guess we'll get it on Monday right? Wrong. The GTS 2B for all it's flaws, would turn angles all day long with no freaking battery. So we broke out the 100 hi-way chain and did THREE MORE EFFING LOT JOBS LIKE WE WERE IN 1975, for the rest of Friday and I think we got off about 7 pm that day.

We still laugh about it now, but I still have a 2B and T2 and a few other "non-battery" items and three brand new hi-way chains when the lights go out. 🙂

Yeah, I could see where it would affect observations by a theodolite or ts, but not sure why it is included with a "chaining kit". I'm not complaining, just trying to figure out why I bought it. Although it is cool and I'm not sending it back. I did find wicks on the internet and look forward to their delivery.

In most measurement modes, my GTS-2B shuts off after about a minute of inactivity. How do you set it to run the battery down? I'd actually like to do that once in a while to keep the NiCd cells from developing memory.

I have no idea, but I know that I could turn it on and it would keep on ticking for as long as I had it on. I did no special trick. If I remember right, when you charged those batteries, you had to turn them on to take the charge also.

If you want to do an altitude observation of the sun (precise time not required) then you would need the humidity and pressure.

Of course all of the Ephemeris data I have found has been on-line so first you would have to develop and ephemeris table.

turning on tracking will run the battery dead.
