In two decades of surveying I only received one tip, it was $20 from a Mexican guy that lived in what looked like a 40 year old single wide trailer where the door was just leaning up no door hinges, down around the outskirts of Tampa Florida.
At that time I was making $5 an hour and that old Mexican sure did make my day.
How about you, ever get any tips?

I've received a tip twice.
Once when I was a crew chief working around the Atlanta, GA area. We finished up a small lot survey, it was a really hot day, and the homeowner gave me $20 and told me to buy us a drink.
Then about 6 months ago, I completed a boundary survey here in WV and met the homeowner at the property (he lives out of state) to walk the boundaries. He gave me $20 and told me to go have a good lunch.
Yes, but, only on a very few occasions.
Usually, its turns out more like the check I received yesterday that was for $150 less than the amount owed with a big ol' "FINAL" noted in the memo line of the check. I know somebody who's going to get a tip....the tip of my boot...stuck somewhere.
In 15 years I have received a tip twice. Once $50 and once $20. The guy that tipped $20 gave it to me personally while still on the job site, then flew back home to New York, shot his wife, went to prison, and to this day still has not paid the survey bill. This was about 4 years ago.
Those are the only tips I ever received unless you count a soft drink, or cup of coffee.
Only once, from the owner of the property next door to where we were working, we had cleared his property line in the process and he was very grateful. 🙂
Verbal tip!)
Yeah, Go jump in the lake!
I have refused one or two. Re-read your code of ethics regarding tips.
Yeah - I turned down a case of beer once from a construction foreman. He had bet his two curb-building crews that they couldn't keep up with my staking. He won, and wanted me to take the prize...
The best perks that have come with the job were camping, ATV riding, hunting and fishing "permission".

B-)
In the early 70's, we would get Crown Royal from the construction companies.
got a case of wine from a distributor after we staked his lot.
got a $150 gift card from the realtor after making a sale go through. the client wanted the property but wanted a porch that would violate setbacks. the realtor went to two attorneys then asked me. the attorneys said it could not be done, but I knew the reason why it could be done. completed the plan, they went to zoning, they obtained approval, he sent me a thank you with a $150 gift card.
I had a client tell me my price was too low as he wrote a check for $300 more than the contract price.
That was nice. The check cleared too.
Got a $50 gift certificate last year from a law firm that appreciated my getting a survey done so quickly. It was nice.
While I was performing my indentured servitude, er I mean getting my valuable experience, a contractor gave the boss a hundred bucks each for me and my helper due to the great construction staking we did (fixed some other peoples errors, made the plan work, saved them a bunch of money on preventing delays and change orders, etc.). I never saw it, but found out about it years later.
yea "Don't try to grow corn in the winter" lol
I did get about a 100 lbs of steaks from a rancher that I did a fast track job for.

Does a BJ count?
"Don't bet on the horses." would be the one I got.

LOL, I heard about that guy!
Did a lot boundary for a recent emigrant from from Greece, he kept trying to give me something and I was finding it difficult to refuse without offending him, I escaped thinking I was clear. About a month later, in he came with two hind quarters of a goat, hair dirt and all. He had family in Washington and the previous weekend was goat slaughtering day. Only thing I could do was thank him profusely and tell him how much I was going to enjoy eating that goat. He left happy and I took the goat home and buried it. Must have been part of the culture he was from.
Had an experience with a Destroyer load of Turks once. We were tied to a buoy in San Diego Harbor and one of the Destroyers we had given to Turkey tied up alongside. They had just finished a Court Marshal and sentenced a man to hang. Wasn't allowed to do it at the Destroyer Base where they were at the time. Early the next day they went to sea. Gone a few hours and returned to port less one crewman, 3 miles was all the further they needed to go offshore in those days for that type of thing.
jud
shoulda roasted the goat up over the fire. Had a friend who raised goats just across the river in Vermont and most of his customers where Greeks. They get all tanked up, butcher the goats and have a hell of a party.
