I am passionate about the surveying profession. Generally an 8 or 9 these days, have had lots of 10 days in my career. But being passionate is giving more than just time for a paycheck or a balance in the business bank ledger. Overall, surveying is a career that seeks those type of people. I understand the delusion and undermining of the passion noted by some posters, it is tough out there for many. To see the passion flame smothered or extinguished saddens me.

Got to tell the old joke:

Many years ago, picked up girl for fun after being out of town beating the bush and riding the edge living the Alaska surveyor's life. After driving not to far she says"your passionate"..... I say wow, so quickly we have met and you say I am passionate. She says "HEY, your really passionate, turn around" I say I'm passionate? She says "YES, the liquor store your passionate (translation: your passing it)" 🙂

9-10

I love it. I try to contribute my share to it. Pay back to it and into it, encourage it in today's you for tomorrow future, promote it in the community and dedicate a good portion of my time energy and free thinking to it...IT rocks.. But I've only been in it since ~ 1999 so im not quite as worn down as others.
Cheers

10 about the profession. 5 to 10 about my job (10 in the rare instances I'm doing something survey-related, 5-9 when I'm surveying a desk)

After 40 years I have to say right now about 5 on a good day but probably around a 4 most of the time.
Same question 10-12 years ago and my answer would have been 8-9.
Lots of reasons why but now just looking forward to the end of the long traverse line!

After 22 years, I guess it is about a 5 for me. Still love to get out and do boundaries, but getting to hate all the other stuff that goes along with it. Dealing with planning and zoning departments gets to be a real drag, especially with zoning guys that think they know more about boundaries than surveyors.

Having to constantly explain why surveying is so expensive is a pain.

Nope, probably around 4-5 range. There's too much divisiveness & variation from one state to another for the professon to be taken seriously. And it sure ain't payin my bills!

Definitely not. There are a few things I am passionate about, but surveying is not one of them. It's a job. I'm good at it, but it's just a job, it's not a lifestyle or an obsession. I do it because I have to. I'd rather do standup. Hey, is this thing on?

Don
