Hello,
I recently purchased what I believe is a WWII era theodolite. Can anyone please help me identify what the manufacturer is and what time period this instrument is from. I am extremely excited to own this piece but have had a hard time finding its origin or how rare it is... The top of the eyepiece says 20x2^ tohko? No.1215 then initials read J.E.S h5. I think it was military but not sure, Any bit of information would be great thanks in advance!

It appears to be a balloon theodolite.
Any chance that is TOYKO predecessor to the Topcon company?
Well, for starters, that looks like a balloon theodolite used in aerographic surveying.
Can you provide a more detailed image of the manufacturer's logo?
Looks to me to be "Pibal" (pilot balloon) transit used to observe weather balloons.

It is probably military surplus. From the color and the lettering I'd venture a guess as to its manufacturer as Wild or Nikon.
Sorry, couldn't be more help.

It certainly fits the description of a balloon theodolite, what era anybody's guess?
That's the Tokyo Optical Company logo. I'd say WWII vintage, most likely.
