I've been following the discussions on using the Parani blue tooth radios on robots. I'm a "visual" kind of guy. Can someone who has this setup please post pics of the DC and robot so I can see if this is a setup I want to use?

I apologize if pics were already posted. I could not find them in a search of the topic.

Thanks.

Perhaps not as useful, but there are a few photos of an internal conversion I did awhile back in [msg=127111]this thread[/msg].

Parani setup - Trimble 5600

I just unwrapped two of these for use with a 5603 Robot. I have a TSC2 running Survey Pro 5.2.

I have the Parani's dip switches set to default (as they came in the box). I paired them per the directions. I have a 5600 series "direct connect" instrument set-up in my DC. It is not set to any special remote settings for the robot. The trick I've found is to connect to the instrument with the cable until the unit wants me to level the "electronic fish-eye bubble" and compensate. At this point, I disconnect the cable from the DC, plug in a Parani to the data cable at the gun and plug in a Parani on the DC. Works like a champ! I had to find the setting to relate the point of view from "at gun" to "at rod" for stakeout corrections so that right is right and left is left.

I hope this helps someone stuck in their set-up.

Target: I guess I could take some pictures for you. Not much to see. Maybe a schematic, like a wiring diagram would be better?

Parani setup - Pictures

Thank you for the information and pics. It looks very straightforward. What kind of range do you get? Does vegetation and topography affect the range more or less than using the robot/brick radio? I not real familiar with blue tooth, but do you know if it's possible to use a third receiver/transmitter as a repeater or booster?

Thanks again.

Aloha, TPR:
You can power it multiple ways.
Sena do sell an extended battery you can buy. Using that you don't have to use any wire. However, you'll need to buy a charger to charge the battery. If your data collector has a USB port then the other options to buy USB power cable that draws power from the DC. I have the usb cable setup. Then I only need to charge my Ranger 500--which I naturally do after each use.

At the gun I wired the Parani power cable to the 12V external battery (motorcylce battery) which also powers my Trimble 5603.

Now I only have to think about keep these two batteries charged in addition to the prism pole.

HTH and please don't hesitate to email or post more questions if you need help.

Aloha and enjoy your weekend!

Aloha, Target:
Yes, vegetation does effect the range. My experience so far, it is far superior compared the (trimble brick radio). Sena do sell what they call the patch antenna. It is a bit bulky to add to your prism pole to get longer range. But the combination of let say the Patch antenna at the gun and long antenna at the prism might give pretty good distance (DAT5-G01R - PAT-G01R 600 meters)

I am very happy with my setup. Thanks to several of forum members, who literally held my hands to get there!.

Here is chart showing the distance with various combination of the antennas...

SAT-G01R - SAT-G01R 100 meters

Parani setup - Pictures

Pseudo- I have the on-board SENA batteries installed to each unit. I have no idea as to how long they last. I wanted the extended life batteries, but SENA was out at the time I made my purchase. The fact that they were out of stock might tell you something.

Swami- Do you have the same comm. issues with your 5603? I have to get the unit powered up with the DC hard-wired, and then go bluetooth. I can't just start off with the adapters.

Thanks.

Aloha, Brian:
Yes, I have the same issue. I generally disconnect once the gun completes auto compensatation routine. I was struggling for several weeks to get it connected. Finally, with Scott's help I discovered I have the regular DB9 coupler instead of Null Modem connector. Once I made the change I never looked back.

Off topic...
I notice we have almost the exact setup except I am using Survey Pro 5.1.1...Were you able to do automatic repetition shots with your setup? I messed around with all the settings but I can only collect repetition shots manually. In automatic mode, SurveyPro requires me to the first set manually, then it starts the automactic set collection process then it fails "waiting for lock." I wonder what is your experience? It doesn't work with the brick radio or the Paranis.

I believe I've tried everything that was suggest in this post...

Your input will be very much appreciated! Aloha

Yoginatha-

In my Ranger (TSC2), I have an instrument set-up for a "Trimble Direct Connect" as per the screen shot below:

When you are going through the Station Setup routine, on the second screen for the backsite setup, make sure you have your backsite target as "Fixed Target" as per the screen shot below:

Then under "Settings", go to the "Repetition" tab and check "Shoot Distance to Backsite" and "Enable Automatic Repetition" as per the screen shot below:

Then, under the "Stakeout" tab in "Settings". Make sure that the "View From Rod to Instrument (remote)" box is checked and the "View From Instrument to Rod (non-remote)" box is unchecked per the screen shots below:

What this is doing is making it so that when you stake out a point, the corrections the DC gives you are oriented to proper right & left as if you were at the rod.

The last bit of tinkering will be under the "Manage Smart Targets" menu(under the star hot-key). I'm using RMT LR prism for my backsites. I have it set up like this:

The RMT LR has the ability to use 4 different infra-red signatures (RMT ID). If you have one of these make sure the channels (0/2/4/6) jive with the settings in the DC or Autolock will not work. You can see the the channel selector in the picture below:

You have to crack the case open to get at the dial, but you can see through the window what it is set at. Mine is on 4, which i believe is the default.

My foresights are usually the 606 360° prism and it is setup like this:

This should do it. I really hope this works for you.

Aloha, Brian:

Wow! Thank you so much for the detailed instruction with images!!:-)
I can see one issue already...I was using a Mini prism for the back sight setup. I don't have RMT LR. I thought I had a second 606 360º I will check in my shop. It had a broken power switch but was working find.
My 5603 is at the Trimble dealer for internal battery replacement. Suppose to be only a few days. The dealer apparently having hard time uploading the firmware upgrade. Almost two weeks now. Hopefully, I'll have it sometime next week. Will report back as soon as my 5603 arrives. I have changed all the setting in the DC per your instruction. Thanks again for sharing!:good: :good: Have great and very uplifting weekend! Aloha

You are very welcome. Yeah, you need a smart target with the infra-red telemetry at the backsite in order to operate Auto. Repetition. Two 360° prisms will work just fine (FS/BS). Please let me know if this works. If not, we will see what else may be awry.

Aloha, Brian: It works! :good: Thanks to your detailed post. You are right, I had to do a bit of tinkering with the "Manage Smart Target" menu. I was using two 606 360º prism. I had one prism (BS) the RMT ID set to 4. Second one was left unchecked. That didn't work. When I set the second prism ID also to 4 it works fine. I don't know if there are any consequences for setting both RMT ID to 4...

Perhaps you or someone can share this information...is there a standard practice how much "worst residual" allowed before you save the observations? Perhaps with a bit of explanation would be very much appreciated!

My DC with Parani SD1000 setup...

Thanks for the pic, yswami! That looks a lot lighter and tidy compared to carrying a brick radio and cables. Nice job. I'll definitely look into that setup.
