Mike Pallamary was on the news regarding the destruction of monuments in California. Now somebody is doing something to protect monuments.
"Even a FOOT or TWO can cause headaches"? Well YEAH. I'm glad that they are at least trying to preserve the monuments.

What difference does it make?
Based on some of the comments in the thread I started the other day who cares about monumentation. There are a lot of people here that say find a pin and it's good where it's at.
With that kind of attitude why go do any research to see what's supposed to be there? Why take any care with setting any pins because where ever you set it it's good? Why worry about monuments because they don't control any pins you find? Just go out and find some hunks of metal in the ground that sort of look like a corner and call it good!
What difference does it make?
No Dave, I think you were missing peoples point. I made a sarcastic comment something along the lines "why bother to even use monuments, I wasn't watching it the entire time of its life, maybe its been moved". Of course using every monument every time isn't the correct answer and ignoring every monument that doesn't fit the measurements isn't the correct answer either. The answer is somewhere in the middle.
A lot of difference
Dave, that simplifies the arguments made to a stupid level. Since I don't really think you are a stupid man, it must be that you have never given any real consideration to discussion beyond the point that it becomes apparent that they disagree with you.
Too bad, you could have been a much better surveyor if you had engaged in real discussion of survey practice throughought your career. Lobbing a philosophical grenade and then disparaging those who disagree with your opinion, or more often your premise, is not engaging in discussion. It belies a lack of confidence in being able to back up your position as a well reasoned opinion.
I don't recall anyone in that thread saying that any old thing that looks like it might have been intended to be a monument that is in the vicinity of where a corner should be should be accepted. That discussion concerned found, original monumentation. Remember, you set up the sketchy scenario to begin with. It's dishonest to now start mischaracterizing other's comments as something they are not based on assumptions contrary to what you started.
