Does it do GPS point averaging? (I shoot points multiple times, and at different times) and does it have a mechanism to see if there is a prev pt in the file, that is very close to it, to average with?
Is it any faster than mine?

(In other words, do I gain anything)

I probably don't need to do it, as I will be back running in a few days. BUT, if it has some advantages, I will plan it.

Can I send any of you the GPS file, so you can make me an ASCII file, or a CR5 file from it? This is just for the job I was working on, when the "Gust Struck".

Thanks!

Nate

I thought you were using Survey Pro, I don't actually know it very well. I'm much more familiar with SurvCE and Leica Smartworx. It sounds like you would love Smartworx, it does all those things you mentioned beautifully including the calculation of a weighted mean based on GPS conditions rather than just a simple average of coordinates. I'm guessing it's faster. It has a USB port built in and a lithium ion battery. Maybe others could chime in on the functionality of Survey Pro 4.5.0. One great advantage is that the screens are relatively easy to replace on the newer model. Just be sure to use an anti-static mat with wrist band when working on any electronics. Ask me how I know.

Is your job in Survey Pro format?

I think so. It makes 2 files. *.RAW and *.JOB I think they are the same.

Aloha, Nate: I am not very sure about the data transfer. It probably depends on the software you are using and what's loaded on the new DC. I transferred data from TSC2 to Ranger 2 once. They both were running SurveyPro. TSC2 had older version and Ranger 2 had a never version of the software. The older data file were updated when I open them in the newer version of SurveyPro.
The data in your DC is your bread and butter so I'd be very careful. I am also assume you have the data from DC backup on your computer right?

Aloha!

Download the Spectra Precision Style Sheet Converter (its free) which will convert your Survey Pro job file to a number of other report formats, including a comma delimited ascii file.

OK thanks Norman. I'll do it.

PS, I don't know my version of Survey Pro. It is the LAST version, that will run in a TDS 200c. But, I don't know what version that was.

RAW files are ascii text. You can open and edit them in notepad.

Not so with JOB files. You need specialized software to do anything with them.

BTW, I think you will find that the Ranger2 that Precision Geo is offering is a lot faster than your Ranger is/was. And it looks to be in very nice shape.

OK, an update: Payden Cash, sent me an older data collector he had. Said it had possible issues, but could not remember what. Turns out, it is a TDS Ranger X series, with no charger, No SD card, no modules under the TOP cover, and a broken keyboard, and the battery is a fancy job, that uses lithium ion inside.
No charger. And, it won't turn on. So.... can anybody tell me the POLARITY, and voltage. So I can go to Radio Shack, and cobble together a power supply, so I can turn it on, So I can see if it has TDS in it, and if it has GPS enabled?

Wow. As I look at this, it seems pretty nice.

Do coords go on the SD card, in the top?

You don't need any cards in it. The unit has internal memory. Here's a link if you want to buy a charger:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=261977860070&globalID=EBAY-US

See the photo I attached. It shows voltage of 5v 4.5 amps, positive in the middle (standard).

thank you, mr Prevision Geo. I am told that there may be things wrong with this unit. I don't really want to wait for a shipped charger to come in. So, I'll either go to another surveyor who has the proper charger for this, or I will cobble one up from parts. I needed that polarity voltage, and amps. to cobble.

Is putting the screen from Paden's unit into yours an option?

I don't think it is an option. Payden's unit is a later model than mine is. It's plastic looks like the one Precision Geo above posted. So, it seems better to me to try to rejuvenate Payden's unit. (I don't yet know if it even has TDS installed, or if it does, that it is GPS enabled). It will also need a new keyboard cover, if all the rest of things are good. It will likely need a new battery, (about $200) and a charger.

I have the new screen for mine, (direct from the folks that supplied them for TDS, no kidding!) ordered from Calif. It should be here about Tue or so. So, I can then re assemble mine. I took the old screen out of mine, (the broken one) it does not look like a good idea to TRY to remove a screen from one of these, and install it into another unit. The glue is simply too strong. You probably would break it on removal. So, the new screen looks like the best option.
I have contacted another surveyor, down near me, and I can get a loaner this weekend (one identical to my broken one) or buy it. He is not using it any more.

So, I have options. They are just not here yet.

I have been working on a skid steer today. Somebody before me has done stuff to it. It needed a new key switch. And, it has no power to the key yet. So, I hot wired the solenoid to the battery, to give it diesel. And, shorted out the solenoid at the starter. It cranks over. Fired a few times. It is a Bobcat 751 It has the top of cab cut off. Mostly used in chicken houses, to clean them out. After I get her running, I hope to then get all the solenoids (in the hydraulic system) working to allow me to use it. It needs forks, and a front bucket.

My big white van is in the shop today getting a new front end. It needed ball joints, and all the rest of things.

Big help is getting ready for bow season.

Time marches on.

Thanks everyone for your time, trouble, advice, and of course, Unc Payden is beyond a gentleman, to send me his unit. It may take me a bit of doing, but it is probable that I will get it going.

Isn't it fun to just tinker. I'm replacing the oil pump on a 1998 toyoya celica. With no power tools. Been interesting.

Ok, I bought another TDS data collector from a friend. (actually, it's not paid for yet, but it is reasonable) BUT, I just found out my LegAnt antenna is cracked across the top. This is not good.
So, I was looking at gluing it back, or such like. Then, I found that many glues contain Titanium Dioxide. This is an oxide of Titanium. So, much of the glue we often use, contains stuff that probably would interfere with the GPS system. I'm going to place this antenna on the base, (So it won't get such use (read abuse!) And, try some kind of sealant.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

"Dread the day. I got a Carlson box, and battled with it for 3 months, and sent it back."

Dude!! you just confessed a 68 year old, pot bellied, Mississippi red neck can do things you cannot!! You don't want to repeat that at the next family gathering!! You might get disinherited. :-$ 😀

There were specific things that caused a collision, that I hear have been fixed Many road shots, whereby I would set it to record a 2 minute session, and a car would come by, and interrupt, and I could not get it to "take what it had". I'm told they FIXED this problem about a month AFTER I sent it back. It was nuts.
Carlson could have told me that it was going to get fixed.
