Just like how Coral "improved" paint shop pro by making it harder to use.
Thanks, I had not heard of sketchup. I watched the tutorial and downloaded it on both computers. Cool program.
It will be interesting to see what they do with it. Keeping it free but adding geodetic capability and COGO functions might make a nice utility out of it.

anyone try 123d by autodesk, it is currently free (beta)
I wonder if SketchUp is what the engineer used when he told me my pipeline profile was 20' to low as it crossed the high point. He had some kind of computer file generated topo data from the interweb.

i've seen some nasty sketchup models where architects try to make a dtm... of course an architect would mess up most dtms so i could not expect much more.
A few years back we had an Architect who wanted some details. I asked about a 3D file and they said they could handle it. We decided to give it to them in Revit as a base model for BIM since they were Architects. They said they would be able to use that. Two weeks later at a meeting they said they were still not able to get the data out of the drawing we sent over. They did not know what the problem was, so I made arrangements to send over a survey tech to see what the issues were.
Turns out they did not have Revit. They were trying to use Sketchup. Of course being the sensitive person I am, there was some type of joke made about comparing that with Etch-a-sketch. I think it came out something like, “Is that the Professional Model of Etch-a-Sketch?” We still laugh about that one sometimes.
I was thinking of trying 123d after seeing your post..... but our "dear" autodesk just won't let me download it. Too much of a pain to attempt to contact them (need me to sign in to create a trouble ticket, that page just won't let me sign in then agree to the terms of service), so I managed to use up an hour or more goofing around with that mess....
I made a model of my 69 Chevy truck back when 123D Catch was called Photofly.
I was planning to try it for a house site as an experiment to accompany a tree & topo, but didn't get that job.
One good thing I could see coming from this would be TerraModel tools inside Sketchup.
If it were done well it might work
