My Leica salesman is telling me that I have to replace my RTK Base Transmitter before the end of the year due to an FCC narrowbanding mandate. It's not a trivial amount of money and the transmitters I have are only a couple of years old at most.

What say you?

There's been a lot of discussion on this topic; search "narrowband" on this forum and you'll find a lot of information. The fine for ignoring the narrowband mandate can be daunting.

Yes you either have to narrow band it or in some cases they can't be narrow banded.

We have a PacCrest PDL radio that can't be narrow banded.

That's what we have, too.

We just had to replace the Base to comply with narrow banding. but the rover radios that are recieve only did not have to be replaced.

About $2500 later, we were ack in business. Our old base quit working so we just replaced it rather than try to repair. We had to buy a differrent antenna base with the system.

See if you can't sell the equipment to overseas buyers where narrow banding is not a requirement.

There's definitely a US market for this equipment, presumably people who are willing to operate it in spite of the FCC regs. Selling it on eBay at a discount beats throwing it away.

Run it until it dies. Then update your radios. FCC is just another government agency that doesn't understand business.

The FCC does, however, understand fines. From the FCC Enforcement Advisory No. 2012-05:

"The Enforcement Bureau is committed to aggressively enforcing the narrowbanding transition deadline and violators may be subject to enforcement action. Penalties for non-compliance may include license revocation, and/or monetary forfeitures of up to $16,000 for each such violation or each day of a continuing violation, and up to $112,500 for any single act or failure to act."

The "run it until it dies" mentality may have a feel-good cowboy aspect to it, but adhering to that approach can get expensive. I chose not to gamble.

Ha that's funny Jim. I bet you own a broad tip permanent marker. As do almost all surveying companies in the USA. That is against the law also. I do and I guess I break the law everyday. I think that we can blame the radio manufacturers somewhat. They knew about this years in advance but didn't inform their clients to what was going to happen. Lets sell this radio at a few thousand and then sell them the one we know they should have bought in the first place. Thanks PC! Call me whatever you want. It will not change my views about the government and our laws. And I will be "Legal" in the future. I guess it just will not be soon. Never know. My radio might just die tomorrow.

Illegal Possesion of Permanent Markers...

... and Spray Paint. Only applies to minors and even then only in the cities which have the ordinance on the book.

As for narrowbanding 99% probably won't get caught, but it seems like those odds never apply to me.

So, I hope I have the settings on my Hiper Pro correct, but there seems to be dissention in the ranks of this forum with respect to their compliance regardless.

Buy from someone else, either he knew it was coming (they announced it something like 20 years ago), or he should have.

This particular salesman just took the job 3 months ago. He did not sell us the equipment we have.

In some cities and it doesn't matter in others what age you are. My point, which you did not get at all, is government has some stupid laws.

Oh, I think we all get it. I think that you are not getting the point that they also have the power to sieze money from accounts to collect fines.

Being right doesn't keep you from jail or from the poor house.
