I'm finally signing up on Linkedin and it's asking me what industry I'm in. There is no "land surveying" listed. I hate to use "civil engineer." What did you choose?

I had to go with Civil Engineering in the end, there does not seem to be any other category suitable for land surveyors. You could maybe put it under information services but I think the category you are listed in effects the suggested connections and who might see your profile.

Hopefully they will put a land surveying category in someday.

Tony Cavel has pestered and petitioned Linkedin for years about a LS designation.
They have not been responsive to him.
I think that I defaulted to environmental services since I have no connection to the other options.

That thing was like a virus - it was never helpful and I couldn't get it to go away.

I used civil engineering too...

There was a "suggest an industry" link there. I sent in "Land Surveying" every day for several years... they were nonresponsive to me too....

They now have a help page that suggests you use the "send feedback" link.....

I will finish my registration information when they add Surveying to their list of professions.

I emailed Linkedin to ask if I could restrict my profile from being viewed in India or abroad. They responded by deleting my profile pic of a compass because it doesn't represent a picture of me. They are crazy if they think I'm sending them a photo good enough that it could be used to make an ID.

Hi Blake,

I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

At this time we do not have a blocking option. We understand the importance of this feature too, and I want to let you know that it's on our product roadmap.

While I don't have a specific release date to share with you at this time, you're welcome to follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/linkedin or check out the LinkedIn Blog at http://blog.linkedin.com for the latest notifications on site improvements. Both options are great ways to stay informed about new releases here at LinkedIn.

Also, your profile photo has been removed because it contained a shape, compass-like image. The photo on your profile should be a picture of you to help others recognize you when viewing your profile or when they receive your LinkedIn messages.

You are certainly welcome to upload a different photo of yourself http://www.linkedin.com/memberPicture or contact us with any questions.

If you have further questions, please feel free to let me know.

amen!
I signed up ten years ago and still get what I consider spam in my email. It does no good to ask to be off the list either.

Beyond the industry and image limitations, what is the benefit for being on Linkedin?
What are the positives?

Positives, as explained to me, are that thirty-somethings and younger will go ONLY to that. They will ignore Yellow Pages and ads to the sole source of LinkedIn and/or Facebook. That means executives can have assistants, secretaries, and underlings look for your specialty. Guess what they'll use for a research tool?

I refuse to get involved with Facebook so I finally signed up for LinkedIn a couple months ago.

So far ... zero results.

If one wishes to be found by head hunters, LinkedIn is where they tend to stalk their game.

I've been ignoring Linkedin.

I'm not sure what it's for.
