Any thoughts on the Leica Sprinter 150M?
I just purchased one from my Leica rep...he's overnighting it for a job tomorrow afternoon.
Our Topcon AT-G2 has developed a bit of a wiggle on the tribrach and I can't find a way to tighten it. We'll probably send the Topcon for calibration, but would like a digital level anyway.
Seems a new digital level is the way to go, what do you think?
Overall, nice instrument that performs well and fast. Alphanumeric key-in is easy to do once you get use to it.
A couple of default settings to watch:
In cold weather (not very cold for most surveyors), the instrument will shut down with no warning once temperature reached. Message "too cold". Apparently, the default temperatures are different in USA and Canada.
Second thing, If I recall well, the tilt warning engages way pass the acceptable limit of regular day to day leveling work. I forgot the particular but I do remember reviewing this issue with the dealer, asking him what's the point of having a warning so far out. (it was something like a 9cm error at 100m range, the tilt error would engage).
Some folks did complain about the "cheap" plastic feel, but I don't think it's that bad.
For the price, it's a fine investment.
Closures we obtain with digital levels are almost unbelievably accurate. I thought it was a random accident to close out as tight as we did on the first one (about 4 mile loop), but the repeatability continued on many lines. I like them far better than optical levels. Only disadvantage I see is that they are not nearly as useful in the woods, and they don't have a 25-foot level rod that I know of. Other than that, they are no-brainers for being the instrument of choice on good level surveying.
I've heard rumors that storing/carrying it any way but upright throws it out of whack.
(Correct me, anyone, if that's unfounded or no longer applicable.)
