Anybody know of an easy way to label lat/lon. Was so easy in Carlson, but alas, not to be in C3D/acad MAP. Asked the engineers and they give me a 10 step process and then some. When I tell them it should be a 1 step process, I get the deer in headlights stare. I'll take anything, ... A LISP FILE??? Did I mention I miss my Carlson?

Hi
Short answer is no easy way.
If you want to label Civil 3D points, you can create a point label/ point label style. There are options of coordinates, grid coordinates, lat/long etc.
I have used this in the past to show as built coordinates on my plans.

So you need points, and to create a label style or edit a point label style. It took me a long time to manage point and label style and description keys in Civil 3D and a couple of support emails. One problem was how to display point elvation to 2 decimal places for example. Changing the drawing units and settings did not work, It was controlled by point label style.

I have been investigating changing from Civil 3D 2015 to Carlson Civil suite 2015 for survey and engineering design.

Regards, Kelvin

You'll never regret it.

its very easy to do. it just takes you about five minutes to setup a point label style. then from that point on, fir ever, it will take seconds to do it.

you can not run civil 3d without being able to make or edit styles. do not expect that the template is ever "done," because it should be a living entity, that is improving a little bit as time marches on.

so, how do you label a lat long?
1. this will be a point label, so either create a point randomly on whatever feature you are labeling, or pick a design point, or pick a survey point.
2. create a point label style from the "settings->point->Label styles -> right click, new
3.information tab: name the style
4. layout tab: component name: dropdown and select "point description"
5. click the hidden ellipsis button to the right of the cell with "" (a three dot button will appear, i promise.)
6. on the properties tab, dropdown the properties button, and select Longitude
7. click the big open right-pointing arrow to "send" the longitude into the description window on the right
8. repeat, this time picking the latitude property.
9. ok, ok
10. edit a point in the drawing window, and choose your new label style.

BAM! Latitude/Longitude!

Ten easy steps.

But - once you're done monkeying with the format, and the order, and the colors, etc etc, you'll add that point label style to your template, and its ready to be used on every new drawing from here on out.

In Carlson...ANNOTATE, LABEL LAT/LON, choose decimal/dms, pick your point(end, center, mid, etc) BAM YOUR DONE, NO POINTS NEED BE CREATED

Oh, Sorry to bother... i didn't realize you were trying to bait folks into a "carlson is better than civil" argument.

I don't take the bait.

sorry, too tired. good luck with civil, i won't bother you anymore with any assistance.

🙁 🙁 🙁 why ask a question if not wanting to get an answer?

Just don't do what I saw on a set of plans today. One control point with SPC north, east, elevation. Another control point was Lat / Long without an elevation. The problem was the Latitude was 73 degrees +. Thats inside the arctic circle but the job was in Kansas. The longitude was about 4 degrees off also. Those were the only control points listed.

Actually points are not required for labeling coordinates. You can also create a Note label style which can include local or grid northing and easting, Lat/Lon, scale factor and convergence.

You can format the data any number of ways, as shown here.

Yup, the best software is the one you know.

Go to the annotations menu and create a note style that labels lat and long. Do this in your template file so it will be available to you all the time. While you're in there create a new note style for northing and easting. I'm sure it will come in handy.

That's the thing with C3D....you have to set the stuff up the way you want it. It is highly customizable. It takes a bit more time getting it set up, but you will be able to finish tasks lightning fast once it's all set up.

As long as your project and drawing are in the appropriate geodetic zone, it is simple.

"Projects" pull down menu, go to "Transformer Settings" and check the Apply Transformer Settings block and apply; thence

"Labels" pull down menu, go to "Geodetic Labels", select Label Location and follow the prompts.
