Dietzgen or K & E?
Nice looking instrument.
As far as temperature-I had a 30" K&E freeze up on me during the winter of '82 while doing title surveys in Austin, TX. The upper motion actually froze to the lower motion. If I remember correctly, it was about 18°.
We used to say the same thing when arguing about fieldbooks vs. data collectors...no batteries needed!
I always thought I was doing somthing skilled when using my transit - skill required you can't just push buttons (you have to turn screws). Knowing how to use a transit was part of your job security back then.

She's a beauty, I think I carried her sister around for years.
Just seeing her makes me want to rub some liniment on my shoulder.
B-)
I was thinking about this the other day.....
When was the last time any one set a property corner (did the entire survey) without the use of something that took a battery?
For me, it was probably sometime in the late 80's......
How about you?
