Found a Fairfax County VA survey monument set in 1976. Listed as ??Traverse Station WAG 2? on the previous survey map of the area (I was doing a nearby property survey) I was pretty intrigued since this is my first one of these found. I knew I??d come across one at some point, but nonetheless, pretty cool! I??m surprised with all the highway construction that it has lasted this long.
It's a BM disc. The triangle was added to use it for a trig point.
I've seen many discs with a hole off center, as this one has. I believe that hole is to vent air when it was set.
Nice find!
Is that the actual point, or is it a reference mark? I ask because on my 11" screen it looks like an arrow is stamped into the disc

It??s not an arrow, but rather a triangulation mark symbol. The reference mark I had to reset because the original PK nail and cap was gone. Previous logs from the Coast & Geodetic Survey dated 2002 says the reference mark was found OK, on the opposite curb of this mark, but I did not find it.
All excited to find an ancient monument set when I was in High School in Fairfax County...way to make me feel old 😉
Looks like a dimple set 0.04' from center.
It's a triangle in the middle of an arrow. Never saw that combination before and would treat it with suspicion until further checking.

I don't think those are arrows, looks like a line with a hash through it going both directions. Who in the f--k would set up a dimple machine and deface that monument?

Interestingly, the NGS data sheet for this says it is stamped 1975. Either the dimpler couldn't make up their mind or three people have had a go at the left side of the disk.
Wild Ass Guess number 2 ????

They can't help themselves, three pincushions on one monument, what's the world coming to?
Somebody's just trying to help by placing a new dimple every time they come out with a new realization of NAD83 in that area. Now if they'd just put a two digit year by each one maybe we could decipher their efforts. :p:p
Had to go to my desktop computer to do the links, too hard on phone. Now I see that everybody else has beat me to it.
The NGS sheet says Monumented 1975 and the text says 1975, but the data base line above the recoveries says stamping 1976.
If you search for nearby marks in the data base, you will find a series of similar ones.
This one is:

https://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=HV8707
Another photo from Geocaching shows that it isn't an arrow.
The previous disk in the series has the same punch mark on the left end of the line, so it is a systematic thing and probably not a "better measurement"
Looks like a drill hole.

Here is an image from Geocaching.com (interestingly, about a week ago) that shows WAG 1. As seen on WAG 2, there is also a dimple set on the far side of the left line. I assumed it was because of the NAVD88 and its relativity to the fact that during lots of them resets, they thought the centerpoint could be wherever, as long as it was on the disk itself.
Is it a weep hole? That's my WAG-1 at it.

No, because it doesn??t penetrate the disk. As previously mentioned, it??s a dimple. WAG 1 & 2 both had it, but WAG 2 had not one dimple on the left, but three, and someone screwed up on the labeling job as they put the wrong year.

At that time, I'd been out of High School for 11 years and out of jail and earning an honest living for four. Surveying, of course. It was a smooth transition 🙂
