A friend of mine came across an old Nikon DTM-5 total station. He would like to put it into service, of course, as usual the battery is dead and the Q-8b charger is gone.

Does anyone have any experience with this machine? I use a Topcon GTS-3B- the edm is slow but it works great for most everything. The Nikon looks to be about the same vintage and seems to be data collector capable. Also, it weighs twice as much as the Topcon, so I am not going to volunteer to carry it.

Is it worth getting the BC-2 battery re-celled and does anyone have an idea what I can use to charge it? Dias and Dias can send me a battery re-cell kit for it...and I may ask them about a charger.

My first gun out of tech school. Best optics I 've ever experienced and purty good in the foilage. When I needed an occasional use weapon earlier this year I looked for one and found several on ebay.

Problem seems to be with the charger/battery on these Topguns. I don't know if it's the connector or some other aspect of the powerplant, but these batteries and chargers are much more expensive/harder to find than charger/battery combos employed by other manufacturers of the same vintage.

I absolutely loved the gun. If you can buy it right it's well worth finding a charger and recell kit.

Steve

Thanks for the reply.

Were you able to use it with a DC?

Yup. Used it with an HP48 and TDS Pro. I think the COM settings a the same as any GTSB Topcon. Not so sure about the connector.

I assume with those COM settings would mean it work with many newer collectors.

I agree with SJC1989. I used this gun for years in the woods. It can rally take the punishment and keep on ticking. I was so pleased with the Nikon product that when I finally needed to replace the A5 I didn't even look at any other brand. That was a BIG mistake. I have yet to find an instrument as reliable as the A5 and the optics were superb.
