I learned a tremendous amount with them. I learned post processed Gps surveying with them. It gave me a foundation, that I still use while doing RTK. It gave me a local network, that I still use to compare my RTK with. I'm amazed at how proper tools, used properly, yield such high accuracy.
By learning Post Processed, GPS first, it really allowed me understand what is happening, and how it works together, before using RTK.
My method is to "Push it till it breaks". These units gave me alot. Time to sell them. Need money to buy more modern equipment.
Thank you
Nate
Is there any cheap/free software that can be used with these?
Nate,
Are you planning to have an Ashtech Locus retirement party for your trusty steeds?
Curious minds want to know...

The H.I. tape is amusing. Do they come like that?

Don't disrespect the HI tape. 🙂
They are great for use with Trimble robots (bottom notch).

That's how they come. It hooks on to the antenna and measures to the point on the tape body. If you notice the length of the tape body is taken out of the first foot. Works very well. Used them on Trimble GPS in the middle 90's I think? May have used a measuring stick on the Trimble?
I have a copy of Ashtech Solutions somewhere. It is L1 only. If I find it, I can include it.
The HI tape is a normal 12' box tape, with a couple of inches cut off, and a button added to the end, to easily facilitate measurement to the butt end of the box tape. They work fast and handy.
The retirement party? I dunno. I want to have a Javad arrival party!!
I will miss those Locus (Locci?) 🙂

The Ashtech Locus L-1 Only GPS receivers were quite the thing in their day. The units ran for 100-hours on D batteries. Ran for 70-hours on C batteries. The Flashing Green LED's, were truely "Smart" before the Smart Antenna concept was introduced to GPS receivers.
One-Green LED blink for a 5km Baseline, Two-Green LED blinks for 10km Baseline, Three-Green LED blinks for 15km Baseline. When the Green LED went solid Green, you collected enough data for a 20km Baseline. The algorithm use a combination of Numbers of SV's and PDOP.
The Infrared download worked great, until Bill Gate's Microsoft's Windows O/S moved forward, leaving Infrared Drivers in the rear view mirror. The Ashtech Solutions GPS Post-Processing Processing software was exstremely easy to use and provided rock solid results. Being one of the Ashtech GPS Technical Support team members and GPS trainer, the Locus L1-only GPS receivers and Ashtech Solutions PP SW made my job a pleasure.
Made it fun.

I would use GNSS Solutions to post process the data. It is newer, and has some good tools built in. I would be very careful about watching antenna heights, but it is a good program, and I use it to double check my Topcon Tools on a regular basis. I generally process in both programs to make sure everything looks okay before publishing any data, or releasing it to clients.
There is a post on the GNSS Solutions antenna height issues that I posted. Just do a search under my name.
Well, they are up to 740$ and the auction is over tonite.
Gotte get em packed up, and kissed goodbye!
hmmm
