I just said no to a new job. I don't have much work right now so I am not sure if I did the right thing.
Lady calls (caller ID says RESTRICTED) and asks if I am a large company or a small company. She doesn't want a large company as they cannot be trusted. She states that a mistake has been made by another survey company and a judge has told her she needs to get her own survey (so far sounds reasonable)Then she says that no surveyor in Allentown PA will do her work as her neighbor has her telephone bugged and threatens any surveyor she talks to. (O BOY) She then says that the City has given her all the papers I need to do the survey and that she will pay me very quickly.
Now I am located 15 miles south of Allentown and in my 35 years of business I have only done three jobs in the city and they were for regular clients. There are numerous surveyors, large and small, located in or near the city.
I told her I wasn't interested. I have read a number of strange client threads here and have had a good laugh, now I guess it's my turn.
Hey Paul L. are you interested?
Yeah, its a good thing you turned her down. (There listening you know)
and monitoring this board too........
How shiny is her AFB ?
Only if she gives you a certified cheque for $ bazillions.

Wisdom and experience at work. You did the right thing, even if you find out later it was legit and she payed as billed, you don't need the worry about the outcome.

Is TDD licensed in PA?
More and more I'm turning down jobs from perspective clients who appear to be trouble makers...and I have no regrets!
Who? Me?
I have never personally done a boundary survey in Allentown, PA. I set 2 up when I worked for a firm years ago, courthouse research and reconn and I personally did several monitoring well surveys within the city for a regular client. If I recall correctly I only did 2 boundary surveys anywhere else in Lehigh County. Just not convenient for me to get to their courthouse. I'ld consider any of the surrounding counties as more convenient. With that in mind I could not be competitive.
Paul in PA
My attitude toward callers like this comes from a poker pro I saw on TV once in a Texas-Hold 'Em tournament --& he said "An amateur is always looking for a reason to stay in the hand -- a professional is always looking for a reason to get OUT of the hand." It feels good (& is wise) sometimes to just say "Nope -- I fold."
