I am looking at buying a Hydrolite echosounder system for some upcoming bathy work and wanted to check and see if anyone on this board has any experience with its reliability, battery life, and overall ease of use. I know the function to change the velocity constant is a little clumsy but I can live with that since most of my work will be in less than 15 feet of water and that correction will make a very small difference to the actual water depth with the unit being factory programmed for fresh water at 60F.
I used the Hydrolite system a few years back to monitor sediment levels below a spillway. I found the system to be a little clunky, but was able to configure it with a Trimble R8 rover. We also had a little difficulty parsing the data and matching the XY coords to the elevations. After a few test runs and double checking the Hydrolite data to a tape, we achieved a satisfactory survey. Make sure you have a good plan to cover the area you wish to survey. It definitely won't hurt to cover the area more than once. I would recommend making at least 3 passes.
I have one. It works fine I guess. My "problem" with it is that we are Topcon and it was configured for Trimble. We have to take a lot of steps to get it work RTK but after we jump thru all the hoops, it works ok. I guess for the money, it is pretty good. I think other hydro units cost a lot more.
I just picked up a rental unit to try out on a project in Northern California.
I've been looking for an excuse to try the Hydrolite on a project.
I'll let you know how things go.
I wish I had this unit years back when I did my mapping project for my Divemaster certification. RTK with a handheld sonar unit and a waterproof dive slate for data collection was rather cumbersome.
Great unit. Just got it a month ago. Seafloor Sytems is class act for an equipment vendor. I have rent a lot of gear from them in the last year. If you are using Trimble gear read my post: Trimble TSC2 Issue
Thanks for all the replies, rental rates look very reasonable so I am going rent one for a couple of weeks and see how it goes before I buy.
We do about 2 or 3 hydro projects a year. I had previously been using a syqwest hydrobox, with frequent problems with getting the unit to connect, then dealing with the data was a pain.
I purchased a hydrolite this year, and it worked great. Seems like it is aimed at Trimble users, but that is what we have, so it was all pretty smooth. It worked flawlessly, and the data was easy to deal with using the style sheets on the TSC2.
One thing-I felt like I was jerked around by the vendor. I considered renting it, but decided to buy instead. They made me fedex a check, and also scan the check and send that by email so it would get shipped out that day (a Friday). Then, they didn't actually ship it until the middle of the next week, with me waiting for it so that I could do a project. What I thought was stupid is that if it was rental, they would have sent it that day, but since it was a purchase, they wanted to wait for the check. Even then, they waited a few more days.
As promised, here are my comments on the project we used the Hydrolite:
All told, we spent about an hour and a half on a three man catalog-raft in the scour basin immediately below the Pit 5 Dam in northern California. Even with the less than ideal conditions, we managed to collect over 3,500 points with RTK lats and lons and Hydrolite depths/elevations. All in a pool approximately 500' x 250'! Can you say saturation (LITERALLY as well as figuratively)?
Once I'd chatted with Cody, back at Seafloor Systems, I got back on track when setting up and corrected the "user error " problem.
As long as you don't try to over-think the set up, the system couldn't be simpler.
The raw data looks amazing. Once I've had chance to clean it up and compare it to historical data - you do NOT want to know how THAT was collected - I'll post the drawings and share.
As far as the comment on Trimble...that's what they've been able to lay hands on. I will be working with them to work out the kinks. We'll also be exposing them to Topcon equipment and equipment from other vendors.
I'll be working with them to hook up the system to use with total stations for those times when RTK just won't cut it.
I really like these guys. They're terrific to work with and really enthusiastic. I'm looking forward to working with them.
I can honestly say that I haven't had as much fun or been as excited about a survey or survey tool for a VERY long time!
Thanks Cody, Zack, John and Tyler at Seafloor Systems!
Way too cool!
Hi ppl , can you give me some easy guide or some video link to see how to establish the interface between the Hydrolite-TM and the Topcon Hiper II and/or Hiper V?... we are having troubles to make a relationship between that devices and the hand-controller Hemisphere GPS.
If that is possible to give that help in spanish language, or maybe somebody knows about spanish support.
thank you.
Call Seafloor Systems at (530) 677-1019. They are very helpful. I don't know whether they can provide support in spanish.
well, we spoke with Tim , from Seafloor, on that number... but yesterday called 2 times, 3 with the tuesday and we finished with Tim angry and cutting the call, we have somes difficults to understand some stuffs, and he was a bit rude.
For that cause , we understand that we can´t call and fix that, would be more easy to see how to configure step by step, and resolve that, because we have this devices purchased since 3 months ago, this came 2 days ago and we are so delayed on this.

Sorry to hear that. I'll put a new title in the subject line to try to draw in Spanish speakers.
Spanish speakers: HYDROLITE-TM help
Thanks anyway ... we're something hurry to fix this and that is why we are reviewing the entire web for visual support bracket with our problem, but I understand that could be used in the future with new users, we have reviewed and see that it is a potentially competent equipment with many jobs. Greetings and Thanks again
Edit: Any Help that somebody could provide after that, we are waiting for news 🙂 Thank you

Spanish speakers: HYDROLITE-TM help
Hi people... well, we are on the same point. We recognize that the biggest problem is us. But we need somes tips to make this work. This Sunday we went to the field to do somes tests... and our first trouble was the RTK´s Modes... In "Network RTK" we have failures, the connections between the controller and the rober falls , points were not surveyed coordinates, and represented in a continuous line, recognizes no separation between them ... because that's obviously not receiving position.
Anyone experienced a problem like this? ... Could guide us in to do?.
Thank you.
