I have been using my old HP48 as a back up Data Collector and I have the ability to download to survey link but cant seem to upload a CR5/CRD to the collector. Any information anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance....

I last used an HP48 as a data collector in 1997. Switched to Husky at that time. So I'm accessing very old and dusty parts of my brain.

DOS. Those were the days. No email. No internet. No network. Being able to wire your data collector to the gun, then to the PC and download, was cutting edge. A pen plotter with actual pens! Maps plotted in under a half hour, if a pen didn't clog up. 640kb RAM and 40Mb of HD storage on this screaming 486 and a 2 color monitor - amber and black. Yep. Living large, we were.

As I recall, you couldn't load up cr5 files. You had to manually punch in control points I think. Maybe.

There was a PC application that accommodated upload as well as download, same as with today's DCs. I used TDS-48 from 1993 until somewhere in the mid-2000s, and routinely transferred files back and forth.

Edit: I think the application was called TFR, and the executable tfr.exe.

So what convinced you to upgrade?

I always used C&G Survey Systems to connect up.

Here is a link to the old TFR program:

I sure hope it's not a copyright violation.

Mostly the fact that the 48 had been discontinued. Even though I had a brand-new backup 48GX waiting in the wings, I felt a little exposed depending on such old hardware and software. John Evers had just come out with the DC50, which I found appealing (still do, though I mostly use SurvCE on an Allegro CX, as the DC50 won't run my TCRA1102), so I made the switch in (I just looked) December of 2006.

You should be able to use Carlson to transfer to the HP48 if you are using SMI, TDS and Topcon cards.

I use SMI Transfer v7 on an Optiplex with XP Pro on a serial port and "null modem cable". The cable is an important feature that many times is overlooked.

Carlson has an improved program called Carlson XPort that has very useful tools to modify files and convert them into different forms for different products.

I have several different programs used thru the past to transfer data to and from the HP48 and HP41 handhelds. Kermit, TDS Transfer and AcitveSync.

It is a simple text file that had been prioritized to fit a certain protocol, aka Mumbojumboized.

I still use my TDS Survey Link program to upload mine from time to time, so it should work. Are all your settings correct? Fresh batteries?

I Use SMI V-7 In Windows 7 To HP 48

No Problems to date.

But, I had to put SMI on the C drive and not in the program files folder to avoid compatibility files data.

I don't think Windows 7 supports KERMIT for some reason.

I have been able to upload from Carlson Survey to the HP 48/TDS.

Also I remember there being a specific sequence that you had to follow to transfer data. I think you had to open the connection in the HP48 before you sent data.
