I have a HP 48GX calculator with the TDS SURVEYGX card and 512 card. I've had these for 15 years or more.
problem I'm having is the calculator kicks out of survey program back to home screen or cuts off when opening a job.
thought it may be a battery problem but from what I've read the 512 card does not have a replaceable battery?
I've run diagnostics etc....cant figure it out. also other calculator cuts off during operation of survey program while collecting date
keep batteries replaced monthly........ANY IDEAS?
thank you
hp48 gx in survey mode goes back to main screen out of survey module
tried resetting calculator nothing fixes problem
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
Back up all files
Take out all cards and check contact
If tarnished clean with clean cloth gently and do not bend any
Look for debris in card slots and clean with compresses air
Put in all cards and format data card and reboot
I see you are in Florida, humidity can sometimes be the cause. Moisture tends to accumulate around any dirt. I second the save clean and reboot. The memory card without a replaceable battery recharges when the calculator is on. So turn it on and let it do it's thing before you ask it to work. Sort of like a morning cup of coffee.

I hope that you are able to bring your trusty GX back to life, but at some point you are going to have to figure out what life without it will be like.

Sounds like a dead fish to me.
I agree with A Harris. It sounds like the cards are losing connection. I would do my best to clean the contacts and see if it helps.
I had the same problem. I took out the cards and cleaned them and got several more years use. Just opened a new one about 2 years ago...
I definitely think a reinstall of the program is in order. There is a best way to do that.
Step by step...
1. With the 48 off, remove both cards
2. Turn on the calculator and flush the memory by doing the three-finger salute: to do this, hold the [ON] key and while continuing to hold the [ON], press and hold the [A] key and then add the [F] key. The calculator should beep and ask "Try to recover memory?" Select [NO] because all the memory you care about is on the cards.
3. After doing the memory clear function above, you should do a "factory reset" on the calculator. This returns all the settings in the calculator to factory defaults. TO so this, press and hold the [ON] key and then add the space key [SPC] which is the key to the right of the decimal [.] point. When you release these two keys, the calculator should beep and go off.
4. Now insert the program card (Survey GX or Survey Pro card) into Port 2 where the memory card normally is.
5. Turn on the HP48GX.
6. Boot the install by typing "alpha" (the [a] key below the [ENTER] key) twice and entering TDS48 and press [ENTER]
7. The calculator should display "Installing Library..., then Completed. Turn off, Insert RAM card to port 2 "
8. Turn off the HP48GX.
9. Remove the Program Card and reinsert into Port 1.
10. Place the RAM card back in Port 2.
11. Boot the install by typing "alpha" (the [a] key below the [ENTER] key) twice and entering TDS48 and press [ENTER] This will boot the program this time and it should come up to the Main Menu.
Note: if you follow these steps, you will have to set your instrument driver again in order for it to communicate with yoru total station.
If all of the above does not do it pop the rubber pad on the right side on the back of the 48 off and with everything removed from the 48 use a large paper clip to insert in the hole behind it to do a total reboot then follow the above instructions
