A friend is offering to give me the tripod pictured below. I noticed, and she confirmed, that it does not have any sort of fitting for attaching an instrument to the head of the tripod. I suspect it is made for photography or stargazing, but am at a loss to know for sure. She says it is not marked as to manufacturer. Any ideas?

My guess is that the head is not original to the legs. The legs look too lightweight to have supported a survey instrument, except perhaps a compass.
The cabinet in the background looks like it could be interesting also.
It's more of a plant stand than anything else, Possibly used by a funeral home to have a plant or flower positioned higher than others in the grouping.

I was thinking the same thing.
I have several old camera tripods that are similar in construction, save the spring loaded legs. Except that the mounting plates are generally some sort of specific design. Two of the mounting plates are relatively cheap pot metal. My guess is the oak head plate is an after-market marriage, possibly hand crafted.
If you were really hard pressed to obtain a manufacturer or date you might seek a camera collector's opinion.
I don't think I've ever seen the tripod that was sold with the famous Bostrum Farm Level. Can this be it?
