My Garmin automobile gps showed me this when I parked under the beach house at Holden Beach, NC. While it thinks it's ready to navigate, this is not the best route for driving to Fort Lauderdale. Shortest, maybe, but not the best. Couldn't help but think about all of the complaints about those who blindly follow the tech, unaware of or unwilling to admit to its shortcomings.

Probably a setting. Maybe "Vehicle Type" is set to this:

When it's not the GPS at all. It's the GIS behind it. Routing data is incorrect. Likely that WAAS enabled Garmin is under 10m.

Oh, the Garmin is dead on, within its limits. It's a great piece of equipment. And, as you well know, it was not telling me to drive into the ocean. Rather, it was saying that, if I drove forward, I'll get wet.

I imagine that it would guide me very efficiently from Holden Beach, NC to Fort Lauderdale, FL. Often, tech errors are due to poor interpretation instead of bad tech, as you pointed out. And that's where training, experience, and a sound understanding of limititations and surroundings become so important.

So, looking at a screen doesn't always provide the answer to the question being asked. And, to me anyway, that is one of the main problems when new technologies are incorporated into existing work flows. Just what is it telling me and just exactly how should I respond?

Yes, Ready to "NAVIGATE" not "DRIVE".

Consider all the information given.
