Topcon has one on their scanner. Complete waste of time takes a few minutes. Only take about 10 seconds with a tape.

I have used my disto to measure up the S6 instrument height from the designed slope point. just gotta remember to input that you measured from there or your HI will be way off.

I have a Disto, probably about 10 years old, I think it was the 1st one with the camera, I sure hope there has been improvements, very frustrating in outdoor use, I really want to throw it sometimes, but then I remind myself how much it cost! I really think Distos were more designed for inside measurements and never intended for outside use... maybe Leica has improved them?

I did this just the other day. Worked great on getting the rod height. I measured from the tip of the rod as it was pressed against a wall and measured to a straight edge that I wedged under the threads where the prism screws onto the rod, added the known height from the bottom of the prism mount to the center and it came out perfect... I asked 3 different people to tell me what the rod height was on a couple of different jobs, got 3 different answers with a .03' spread using a tape measure.

.03' (9mm) is quite a lot.

Yeah I know [emoji51]
Care must be used when reading the tape. Mind you 2 of those people weren't surveyors and the other was the FNG on the crew.

I just bought the Leica Disto E7500 two weeks ago. It works great in the sun with the camera. It was pricy at $650 but I find it works much better than my old Bosch.

I have two Leica Disto E7100i Lasers. Good for manholes but unusable in direct sunlight. It's more along the lines for an interior designer, carpet measurement etc.

Anybody know of a hand-held distance meter with a reliable/fairly accurate compass? I can see where I could take a shot at the rod with my robot, and then input a distance/azimuth into the description field. Just mount it to the rod. I guess I could use a separate compass and a "disto", but it would be handy to have an all-in-one unit. I do a lot of tree location surveys, so it doesn't have to be a super precise compass.

A couple of years ago, I looked into exactly this, and the best I could find (I didn't actually get one) was the Leica disto mount:

But I see it has no compass on it, so further re-reading of the Leica specs indicate that the models of Disto that this is meant to be used for, have inbuilt compass and clinometer. I also just saw this, which looks like an interesting application of something similar:

Richard,
Thanks, I'm going to look into one of those.
