I found this marker while "ground truthing" for a lidar job. (does that mean they produce ground lying maps).

I'd feel a little better if it read "First DOCUMENTED
White man...." because we know that Portuguese fishermen as well as Norsemen were here at some point! (otherwise how did the Indians know other languages? It is said that some knew a few english words, too)

Here's the marker;

and a representation of his map that he made in 1606
(I'll be "ground truthing' around here)

As for "Ground Truthing", isn't that what we call surveying??

It's funny, to me, that after the tens of thousands spent on a lidar fly over, it still comes down to one guy crawling around on the ground to make the data worth while. And then the client wants to bicker on the time it takes... As if $7K on the survey is out of line with the lidar flyover and map creation! They actually did ask for one day of surveying, so i asked what they would do with the data dump from a one day survey? Wouldn't they like me to process my work? And they neglected the tidal influence for some of this work! oh well, I'm on the job, getting it done...

Really mess with them:
Stage Harbor Road was formerly Atwood Street
Champlain Road was formerly Smith Street

Are you updating the lidar done back in '07 or is it from a new flight? The '07 stuff is awesomely awful; they did not distinguish features: the trees, buildings, cars and other things all appear as little hills. It was flown for bathymetry, but they caught a huge swath of dry land. I revised it a bit out on North Beach, then created a 3-d model of the beach and used Carlson to drive a virtual school bus out there.

I would almost suggest using the 2000 aerial topographical maps for some truthing. Those are very close to reality.

Since you're family is probably the second "white men" in Chatham I will defer to your knowledge of road names, past and present...

As for the lidar, I believe it's brand spanking new for marsh restoration projects. I don't ask since it not relevant to my work.

How is the ground "truthing"? Is it truthing or lying to you?

The last project I did the ground "truthed" really well.

Others projects I've worked on weren't so truthful.;-)

Years ago I set a project BM on the foundation of a very solid grave marker which was real close to our site. I worked for a city at the time and the city engineer did not think that was appropriate to list on the plans "BM - SE corner of John Smith grave stone....".

I thought it was cool and wish somebody would put one on mine someday. But instead I had to go set another one in a PP or something stupid.
