We're verifying a bunch of section corners. So far we've been able to locate them directly with GPS. We're locating the accessories with GPS and instrument. In every case we're occupying a known point, sighting the section corner with zero, and turning to an accessory. We record angle and distance. Are accessories placed to reset a section corner, or to recover one? Many accessories are set in wood power poles. I doubt if a section corner could be properly reset by pulling a distance from one of those. If you look at a Certified Corner Record, the accessory distances are to the nearest hundredth, yet the azimuths are only to the nearest degree. The last section corner we recovered on Friday had only one remaining accessory, which was a 5/8" IRC. It's underwater, so I can't ID the cap. I can barely steady the GPS pole on the cap because it's so slimy. No way I can use a bipod because the water is up to my elbow, and the surrounding soil is too soft. Should I try to steady with a shovel for 3 minutes, or should I take an offset shot right next to it? I think the cap is 0.05' wide and the GPS pole 0.12' wide, so that's 0.085'. Not enough to worry about?
