anybody know of a calculator & program out there which is available for basic traverse and COGO?

I see one by Precision Survey Solutions for the HP 50, but am wondering what else is available. The PSS DC50 "Assistant" looks like it will do the job. However I'm hoping there is something out there even more watered down for ease of use by some trainees I'm looking to hire.

I still have a TDS package on an HP48 that I could use for this purpose, but would like to get something currently commercially available for ease of quick replacement should it get lost or damaged.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure buying smartphones for the trainees is what would work best, but I'll take a look.
thanks,

There are free software programs online that anyone can download.
PSS is a very powerful software with the most responsive support I have ever personally experienced.
D'Zign also has a very good software (not free, but relatively inexpensive).

Depends on the "Trainee", But I would not trust most of them to make ANY field calculations more than addition and subtraction for elevations and I would check or have that checked twice.

Responsible charge over a new, green crew (or any crew for that matter)??

Yeah, I'll probably give that a try.

Thanks Cap'n.

Not exactly, BUT the author has been writing surveyor software for HP handhelds for something like 30 years, he used to sell a package for the HP41, was my main package in the 1984-1987 time frame, his stuff was better than the rest of the pack at that time IMHO.

I don't know anything about this package but it is reasonably priced.

Also as noted above Jeffery T. Moog (stk4hp) has been writing COGO software for quite some time and it has always been great stuff, written by a surveyor for surveyors.

I am using a free program for the 48GX that I got off www.hpcalc.org. It is called Jason Low-Budget Survey Programs 6.15. The reason I like using it is because I don't need to get into a menu based program like the TDS. You can still add and subtract and do regular stuff on the 48 while in the program. It has all the programs you would possible need for out in the field. I have been using it since his program for 10 years and I couldn't be happier.

thanks for the link

looks like the Jason program and others are for the 48 only. I'm guessing they won't work on the 50 but thats just a guess on my part at this point.

I've got a couple of 48GX's so I could try it out on them, but I'm kinda wanting to go with a current model.

thanks again for everyone's comments. Much appreciated.
