What is the best laptop for use in the sun?
?ÿ
Maybe one of those Panasonic toughbooks? I've had great luck with the Panasonic toughpad tablet for the past couple years of daily use.?ÿ
I don't think there are any unless you go to machines specifically made for outdoor sunlight, and that probably means a tablet, and that means you probably wont get the power/storage that a laptop can provide.
I bought a laptop a few days ago, and it seems that most manufacturers are now quoting brightness specs, and they seem to be around 300 nits. A typical phone has max 400 nits and they are barely sunlight readable. You need around 800 nits to be sunlight readable.?ÿ
Panasonics are good. These work quite well in Middle East so should have no problem in temperate sun. Dell and Getac are also good. Another criteria I would consider is local service.
Sincerely
Panasonic Toughbook CF 52 and CF 54. The 52 is a little old, but still working fine. 54 has more ram and a faster cpu, so a little better than the 52. I used them both as truck laptops and on ocasions I set them on the tailgate to show people some details.?ÿ Visibility in direct sunlight is acceptable, not perfect, but the laptops are as togh as nails.?ÿ
I have a ToughBook as part of my rail geometry trolley.?ÿ It works well in the sunshine, both the normal and the liquid variety we get here in the Pacific North Wet.?ÿ The one thing I don't like about them is the lag in chip technology Panasonic favors when configuring them.?ÿ They always seem to be about 2 or 3 generations behind the current.?ÿ Not much of a problem in the case fo the trolley but it would nice if they came with a little more processing power.?ÿ There are a couple of others manufactures of ruggedized tablets and laptops that are more current with their chip selection, DT Research comes to mind.
For day-to-day laptop needs I have been using a Microsoft Surface for several years.?ÿ They are by no means ruggedized but they do work well in the sunlight and have plenty of power to run CAD in a hotel room or the cab of the truck.?ÿ I just switched to a Surface Studio Laptop which is a powerhouse capable of heavy CAD and running LiDAR software.
Dell makes a rugged laptop with an outdoor visible screen.?ÿ I have one and love using it outside.?ÿ Not sure if I would consider as as good as a toughbook is.?ÿ I wouldnt use it in the rain or snow but it has held up for the past year with no issues.
