Just got a map from an adjoiner to one of my projects...........
The data for this mapping is very interior sectional line dependent.......
Couldn't make out why my map wasn't making any sense to the neighbors map, turns out the other firm used Earthpoint for their section lines.......its about 300-400' off in this section,,,,,,,,,,
sigh..........
just beating my head against the wall:pinch:
Earthpoint is handy for a quick lat long to state plane conversion. I use it frequently to locate county benches and things. To be off 300' feet it sounds like they used lat and long with no decimal seconds. Terrible to have done with important corners...

Earth point is something I basically stopped looking at a long time ago beyond just a very rough idea of where the lines might be. For this project there are disputes, lawyered up people, I told the "other side" I would be willing to work with the people they hired and resolve what I can. Then I get this map, I can't have my client spend money "fixing" other people's maps..............
As far as Earth point goes its so bad there that it's laughable, the quads are correct, I don't know where this junk comes from but it isn't even close to professional data.
Let's be realistic here. Earth point is a valuable resource. I use it all the time for planning and to get an idea of "the lay of the land.
However, it is a topo map, with inherent inprecision. For showing topography and gereral line work it is an incredibly convinient tool.
Saying that it is laughable that it doesn't provide survey quality line work is akin to complaining you can't survey your property with your smart phone.
It's just a tool. It's not the tools fault if you are using the wrong tool.

Yes realistic would be nice,,,,,,,here is an example of earthpoint section lines near the area:
We all have see the green dots marking the center of 1/41/4's that earthpoint shows, there is a fence line running along the ones in the picture, that is the 1/16 line on the ground, the 1/16 line that earthpoint has 500-600 feet to the north, I'm sticking with laughable
Some of them we get down here are pretty funny too.
We use Earthpoint for crew driving instructions to the site and little else.

I use it to navigate roughly around in Google, it will get you to the township/section you are looking for, from there I usually forget about it. Never thought I'd see it show up on a drawing.

So a machete is a great tool for a field crew, but if my Dr. came in to do heart surgery on me with a machete I would scream "WRONG TOOL!!" Or if my wife used a machete to get my kid's slivers out, instead of me using my picket knife 🙂
I agree SP: Earthpoint is an AMAZING tool. It will at least get me on to the correct assessors map, and I can go from there. I cant blame the machete for not being as good as my benchmade!
We quit using Eartpoint the day we discovered PLSS for GoogleEarth...
