I'm usually pretty good that this stuff. The only way I can get my Ranger/Nomad to connect to a WiFi hotspot is if it's an "open" (unsecured) network.
I've tried both my Home Wifi and my wife's IPhone Wifi Hotspot, and it won't connect. The Iphone does not appear to have an option to create an "Open" network. Looking into it, see the Iphone uses WPA2, which is supported by the Ranger/Nomad, so I'm really puzzled by this.
Same with my home Wifi. They both show the networks as being available, prompt me for a password when I try to connect, then just kick back to "Available" rather than "Connected".
Anyone have any tips, particularly on connecting to an Iphone Hotspot? I think I've tried every setting option, so I'm curious if anyone has gotten a Windows Mobile Device to play nice with an Iphone.
Thanks.
My best advise for the IPhone is to jailbreak it. I did have some success, but it was awhile ago and I finally gave it up. The thing is they didn't want anyone to use it to it's full capacity. So they tweaked it; a lot!
Iphones only recognize other Apple products like the IPad etc. I am not an expert; just my heartbreak at not getting it to be real functional for surveying use.
Hopefully someone here has a better recommendation.
Edit: I also have tried to use the Windy31 usb router/mifi.
This is may be a good possibility for your Ranger ( I was trying to hookup to a TSC 2).
Thanks,
I thought Wifi was supposed to be universal ... Unfortunately, it's not my Iphone, so I don't want to mess with it too much. I really just wanted to try the Iphone to troubleshoot a latency problem I'm having with Network RTK.
I'm sure that android type phones would have an wifi that would better match the ranger. The tablet I use does connect to other devices pretty easily. If you can get one to try and succeed please post your results. I'd like to know what does work with my TSC 2.
Still haven't been able to figure out that whole NTRIP connection yet. I need some time to sit down and work it out.
Open wifi is not possible on a stock iPhone. I haven't looked at jailbreaking in a while but some googling should tell if that is an avenue. However, I believe that jailbreaking has gotten harder to do with the later versions of iOS. That being said, one oddball issue I ran into with the iPhone as a hot-spot is the apostrophe that is default in the iPhone's name. On your phone go to Settings > General > About > Name. Try simplifying to a one word name. Non-letter characters have to be represented by their ascii form and I believe that messes with the older/simpler wifi hardware in some data collectors. I don't guarantee that this will fix the issue. The encryption may still keep it from working. And in case you weren't aware, Bluetooth will definitely not work. While the iPhone offers Bluetooth tethering, data collectors don't see the iPhone as a "phone"
This is interesting.
I have an iPhone 4, and I regularly connect my two laptops, my nook color, and my Samsung Galaxy Note to my iPhone without any trouble. I don't connect them at the same time, but do connect all of them at one time or another, on a regular basis.
I have two Ranger data collectors that I have not tried to connect to my home network, or my iPhone.
I know this is kind of basic but I have a Ranger 500x and sometimes I have to do a soft reboot 3 or 4 times to get it to correctly see and connect to an available wifi. Can't explain why.
Good luck.
Dave.
