Hello.

Do others provide ASCII files (x,y,z) to engineers and/or architects when requested??ÿ ?ÿI seem to be getting asked this more

often and was wondering if it was a standard deliverable besides ACAD and pdf files.?ÿ Thanks.

?ÿ

I wonder if this is because those architects and engineers feel they aren't getting a CAD product they can directly work from or it doesn't look how they would like it to.?ÿ

I have requested .txt, not because the survey was incompetent, but because I have a way I want the data presented and didn't want to go through the process of reworking their CAD or trying to export/create points from their CAD and then importing into my template.

Yes. We are asked about 25% of the time. Do you expect that there's a potential downside to providing this?

We seal/sign the hard copy dwgs, legal descriptions, reports, etc. but not the printed ascii file.?ÿ

Pretty much the SOP here as 90% of our work is for other design professionals.?ÿ That said, my control is mine and does NOT got out with the rest of the data.

I work in C3d. When sending stuff out of the office I put together the following package of files:

  1. The Civil3d drawing.?ÿ
  2. A vanilla AutoCAD version of the drawing in 2004 format
  3. An ascii file (P,N,E,Z,D) of the points
  4. An xml file of the surface and alignments, if any
  5. A pdf of the sheet file (ie/ with drawing border, title, stamps, etc.) with signature

I remove check shots from the drawing before exporting the ascii file. I'll also clean up any miscellaneous layers with comments, calculation trials, etc. I segregate my control as permanent and temporary, eliminating the temporary from the deliverables. So some control will be included, but not everything. These files get attached to an email for delivery, and a copy of the .msg (Outlook message file) gets saved to a deliverables folder for my records.?ÿ ?ÿ

Yes, if requested we would send a .txt file along with the drawing.?ÿ I never striped the points out so they are in the drawing also.?ÿ We also made sure to print a .pdf file of the txt file and include that also.?ÿ It's harder to "accidentally" change a pdf if something comes up.

When ever anything went out, a drawing, points list, word document, a pdf went with it.?ÿ So if things get turned on or off, something edited or otherwise there is always the original pdf that went with it.

If it is identified in the contract as its own separate deliverable then yes,?ÿ otherwise, no.?ÿ Its kind of a moot point if you're working with Civil3d drawings since the points are located within the drawing and anyone can export a csv in about 3 mouse clicks.?ÿ Obviously, other software works differently.

As?ÿJKinAK?ÿpointed out, the CSV file is not a signed/sealed deliverable.?ÿ Or at least it never has been in my experience.

If the txt file is the deliverable I digitally sign a pdf or print and sign a copy for the file. If it is in support of another document it's provided as a courtesy. Either way the contract says what is and isn't getting done...

Fortunately for me I am not asked for the point files very often so I don't supply them except to those that I can trust to know how to use it. Clients, never. The recipient, usually an engineer or architect, acknowledges that they are not to share that data without contacting me first. All electronic data is backed up with hard copy that is signed and sealed per state law.?ÿ?ÿ

They are paying for what they want in whatever form they want it in, just meet my price and it is yours.

Title companies are getting where they can't close a job until they get your word file for the property description and invoice and survey report.

People will do anything before they have to type it into their system themselves, even beg, nag and pull out the puppy dog tears.

I should have specified that this is for delivery to other surveyors, architects, and engineers on the project design team. Homeowners who?ÿ I might be doing a boundary for get a pdf of the sheet file map.?ÿ
