In Wisconsin we have a similar law.

I look at it like this:

I am liable for damage to property, but the venue for that is court, albeit, small claims court.

No judge I know is going to clog the court up with a twig cut or a nail set, unless it later punctures a $900 tractor tire.

Of course, a boxelder branch in the back 40 isn't the same thing as a flower bed on ornamental tree. Use good judgement.
