While convalescing yesterday, I watched the 1st two episodes of the news series Outer Range on Amazon Prime.

Set in Wyoming, a point of conflict in the story is, something to the effect of, "the original topographic map is in error. 600 acres you've been ranching for 100 years is my land. Move the fence."

Me, yelling at the tv (at least 3 times as the story progressed) : THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS!

My wife just rolled her eyes...

I'm not a PLSS guy but they showed the root of the problem with an old map and at a one second glance, there appeared to be a diagonal line running across one corner where ownership may have been sketchy.?ÿ In talking about it, a square mile was in issue.?ÿ A whole series based more or less on a boundary dispute so far and not one word about a surveyor.?ÿ There was a piece of paper with the "Assessor" plainly visible was wadded up and thrown out as a nose thumb to the obvious authority on such things.?ÿ I guess we can all retire now.?ÿ The assessor's office has the boundarys worked out.

Now, I see the problem.?ÿ They got the maps from the GIS Department at the County which is part of the Assessor's Office.

After reading the OP I don't really care about no maps, I'm just happy someone else yells at the TV. I thought it was a sign I was finally going crazy. ?????ÿ

I talk to my TV quite often.?ÿ Usually during the "news" when they make some completely inane statement which any reasoning person can see through.?ÿ I'm not talking about a political slant (although those certainly exist), but totally inaccurate statements that are there only to get the viewer involved.

I tried explaining to my dad once how you can have more acres, due to undulating terrain, than the boundary would indicate.?ÿ I probably explained it poorly though because his confused look never really went away.?ÿ Ha?ÿ I also remember asking in school if the original surveyors running around with chains measured slope distance on everything.?ÿ Anyway, it would be funny if the rancher or whoever in this TV show was talking about surface area-- they apparently mentioned topo map after all...?ÿ ????ÿ

@bstrand?ÿ

A rancher buddy of mine brought up that same issue.?ÿ Yes, there are more surface acres on a mountain than what we would count in a survey.?ÿ But, the rainfall and sunlight would be less per acre, on average.
