Does anyone know if copperwelds are still available? If so do you know of a supplier?
Thanks,
Greg

OK, I'll bite....what is a copperweld?

The curiosity was killing me as well. Google didn't turn up any answers that were obviously survey related.

It is a pointed copper rod with a copper cap on it.

I've seen copper coated steel rods used for grounding electrical equipment. I always assumed that the copper coating was used to improve the grounding properties. From a surveying perspective, are the copperwelds used to increase the durability of the monument?

The copper coating was intended to reduce surface corrosion of the iron rod.
With the bonded top they were unique and it would be obvious to a surveyor that they were a survey monument and not just a stray chunk of iron. I have found them set as reference points and R/W monuments along some PennDOT roads which were reconstructed and widened in the 50's and 60's.

Yes, the copper is more resistant to coorosion than is ferrous metal.

Rebar and crimped pipes fair well around here, but it would be nice to have an affordable, recognizable monument that homeowners and contractors can't buy at the local hardware store.

Aluminum rebar caps with the plastic sleeve are economical and you can have them pre-stamped. We use a 2" diameter cap.
