This just from our State Board Of Registration Newsletter:
"Construction staking/layout is required by state law (73-13-73(c)) to be performed by a PS or a PE, practicing within his area(s) of expertise and competence. The licensee is in responsible charge for the staking/layout work being performed under his license, even if performed by a subcontractor, and should affix his seal to it."
Looks like those "shade tree surveyors" are going to need to see if Sears will refund the money they spent on their "survey" equipment.
What is your position on Machine Control, as it relates to this law?
:stakeout:
(I personally believe it is a form of stake-out and should be regulated accordingly.)

Looks like those PE's and PS's are gonna need to get a new book.
I like it... I hope it spreads from state to state.
The user will regulate machine control much better than any board and that regulation will always be current with the technology. Does not matter to a producer what provides the guidance as long as it is good guidance, the word gets around fast in the construction circles, much faster than a board can act or modify rules. I'm licensed but not qualified to work in machine control as a professional, could learn, as could most intelligent and responsible people.
jud
How so? Whut fer???
Does this affixed seal go on every stake? This survey equipment you speak of, is it the same measuring devices the concrete crews use?
Does that mean every contractor building a house has to hire a surveyor to lay
out the foundation?
I hope the MS Board has the teeth to enforce it.
Ohio board issued an opinion on "Construction Layout Services" in 2009. The link is a pdf file.
It says clearly what it means and it clearly means what it says. My understanding is that this ruling will be expanded in the future.
Does not really matter who likes it or not; that's the law down here and our state board is VERY active when it comes to enforcing the laws and rules. Very active.

Where is Thad!!!
It has been that way in NC for awhile but the Board doesn't do much about it. Also I have found lately that Surveyors are not charging enough for models. Don't charge by time, charge by worth of the model for the contractor. Also, please learn how to model first before taking one (something about practicing outside area of expertise?)
Nice! Would be nice if the rest of the States followed.
