Well the title sums it up, but more specific what type of dress do you find more appropriate vs not tolerated while out on the job? I was thinking of lightweight khaki BDUs as I am usually staking and don't care to wear out my jeans but wasn't sure as to how professional it looks. Other than that, any type of pants/shirts you have found work great during the heat of summer?

I wear shorts in the winter, so it depends on who you work for. Basically: no alcohol ads, no tobacco ads, no swear words, preferably no bar ads (but some of those might be ok). I personally would keep all religion off of shirts also.

It's really about who you work for (employer), and who you are working for (client). Use some logic and common sense.

Jeans and/or Dickies aren't too expensive and can be worn to pieces.

I like these in the coyote color...
LA police gear
Check the site to catch them on sale. The have a tailored look to them that I really like. Stretch waistband and the crotch gusset is a godsend. There are also some with a flannel lining for winter, awesome. I wear the same thing in a shorts version in the summer.
That site also has some TDU pants that go on sale for $20 now and then.
I wear Columbia PFG shirts in light blue. I took a lesson from the Hispanics in the area and I now wear my shirt sleeves rolled down. I feel cooler and the protection from the sun can't hurt. They are very well ventilated. That's a PFG in my avatar pic with my trusty Tilley hat.
Together they look great and wear like iron. Makes you look like you showed up to git 'er done.

If you're concerned about looking professional don't wear a t-shirt, but a shirt w/ a collar. I had some polo shirts made with our agency logo on, but I prefer a cotton/poly blend wrangler button shirt in the heat of the summer. Nice and cool. Jeans or Carhartt's are fine if they're not too ratty.

Tee shirt is okay IMO, especially on a construction site, but it has to be clean and kept tucked in. I prefer a collared shirt in most circumstances.

No shorts allowed. Never. But BDU's would be fine. As long as they aren't ratty. With jeans $12 a pair at Costco there just isn't any excuse for wearing ratty pants.

1st layer, usually polypropolyne
2nd layer, fleese lined carharts, flannel shirt
3rd layer, down snow pants or arctic weight carharts, insulated vest
4th layer, down parka
with either bunny boots or sorels

Best idea: stay in the office, it's ffffflippin' cold out!

On a side note, a speaker at a surveying seminar I attended was addressing the public's perception of the surveyor. He said the first thing he would steal if he wanted to be a thief would be a cable guy's uniform. Makes you think...if you saw someone in a ratty ponytail, Def Leppard T-shirt and f-ed up jeans in your back yard with a machete would you react differently than if he were well-coiffed and in a proper "uniform"? Both get the hairy eye from me, the guy in the uniform might not meet the Glockster right at the get-go however.
🙂

lol, winter it's bundle the hell up here too.

Thanks for the input, I've thought about the uniform type thing with the collar shirt, I only wish I could wear shorts on days shooting asphalt parking lots!

Ain't gonna be no surveying and staking til after He11 freezes over. Predicting 19" of snow on top of 1/2" of ice with 40 mph winds.

I'm going to be wearing shorts and a tee shirt and hanging out at Beer Leg a lot the next few days.

Same idea during the extreme heat of the wonderful south... stay in the a/c.... there is just no way to dress light enough, just downright impossible...:-|

Collared shirt, Wrangler jeans, and Justin work boots. I would not be morally opposed to a collared uniform shirt.

Sleeves down in the summer with wrangler welding shirts, blue jeans and steel toed boots. Briars eat the bdus up faster than denim

Winter, I'm a lot more flexible. Just about anything that will keep you warm/dry and look as professional as possible.

I disagree with that choice of colors. Someone might think you are an Auburn or Florida fan!

Well, you gotta admit it's better than turquoise jeans and an orange shirt!

The Dickies pants and tees are a good match for the field. They don't fray very easily and are better than jeans in brush and briers.

I prefer metal snaps like on the Wrangler western shirts rather than buttons.

Synthetics and me do not get along, especially outside in the elements.
