This one seems pretty pricy in one of our downtown shops but I see them time to time at garage sales. We have so many rivers nearby that a lot of boat gear is for sale.

This one is supposed to be late 1800, early 1900's vintage but I'm not familiar with boat compass gear.

I'll keep my eye out for others if anyone is interested in these sorts of compass's.

And after all these years, I still cannot avoid finding these all over the place. 🙂

And for those interested, I'm loving this area with all it's history and the beautiful tall trees and twisting roads. Lot's of deer so caution is paramount when riding with the narrow right of ways along even the highways.

Nancy is having finals today and has one more semester left in school. I've been helping all I can but the terminology is pretty tounge twisting at times.

We are very involved in the art scene locally and also with pet shelters so that gives us lot's to do when not studying or exploring the roads. This is a yak downtown at the Yeiser art center. There are dozens of art studios downtown and it's a great place to just spend most of the weekend walking around, chatting and sitting on the banks of the Ohio.

And job wise, it looks like I am possibly going to be hired to help 'survey' (okay, provide my talents as a gunner)for the ongoing Olmsted Dam and Lock project. Waiting on a call this week to confirm. It's a huge project that has morphed and now is predicted to cost over 3 billion.

And Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or just Smoking Festivus. What ever your poison from Nancy and I.

Great to hear an update Brother D.
I was out with a friend the other day and a feller went by on his bike. I imagined that could have easily been you going by.
I figured you would call before blowing into town on me... but then again...
🙂

Merry Christmas to you and Nancy.
E.

Boat Compass>Binnacle

Thanks Don. I'll keep my eyes open at garage sales. I've seen a couple that I could have purchased for $10 or less. I think most though were smaller and probably recreational boating instead of the larger commercial variety.

I picked this one up and it weighed about 10 pounds. Pretty heavy but a lot of brass.

This one had a serial number and the price of one, to me anyway, should be tied to the actual boat. If it was from something like the American Queen they just redid then it has more value.

We see the big riverboats about once a week down on the shores and they are always fun to watch them dock and then undock. They have tour buses that meet them at each town to take all the passengers on tours around each area. Once the passenges get back on the boat then the tour buses race to the next point of docking to be ready again.

I really like our rivers and the area is called Four Rivers because of all of them. Below is the buses they use for tours. Really nice and we have a group of locals in red jackets that meet them at the dock. These visitors are ambassadors and provide any local information, directions and offer help to those that might need it.

PS_If you like bridges then this area has a plethora of them. Yes, I like using that word.

Deral

Sent you an e-mail through the message board earlier, but did not sign off on it. Also did not know if your profile is up to date on the email address.

Looks like you are in the southern Illinois, western Kentucky area for a while. If you are interested in attending any of the Kentucky Association of Professional Surveyors meetings, we would love to have you. Just shoot me an e-mail and I'll fill you in on the details. This Saturday is our annual holiday meeting (basically a meal and fellowship), if you and Nancy would be interested in attending, please know you are welcome.

Boat Compass>Binnacle

Compass is a compass afloat or ashore. Binnacles are the stands, mounting points for the compass and are usually equipped with some sort of protective shroud with lighting over the compass. Sometimes the wheel is also mounted on the Binnacle, ships usually have iron balls mounted on the binnacle and used to adjust the compass, boats use a compass with internal devices to adjust the swing of the compass card. The ships I rode, had the gyro repeaters mounted on the side of the binnacle but not on C/L like the magnetic compass was located.

Last time I talked to him, he's in Paducah (sp?) KY.
Being born in S. IL there ain't much to visit there unless you are into the SIU Salukis. Giant City state park has some good rock (not mountain) climbing.
Maybe catch a Cardinals game but you have to cross the Big Muddy for that.
You riparian guys can explain what I mean by the Big Muddy.
Grizz can chime in any time. 🙂

I recognized the entrance to the Paducah riverfront in the background of one of his pictures. Spent way too many nights in the 90s down in that area at a little restaurant and bar called C.C. Cohen and another metal bar in the same area.

Also, spent many days doing a design topo on the riverfront from a block east of where Deral's photo was taken over to the old Executive Inn location.

My informal browsing of compasses on eBay indicates they don't sell for very much.
