Happy Monday,
I might have an opportunity to help out with some design & layout of some baseball / softball field somewhere here in central Indiana (I think). At this point I know very little about this possible project. I was hoping that maybe you could help me with some details & direct me to some official locations to help me be better prepared in case this guy calls me back.
I do not know at this point if we are talking baseball, softball, adult, child, male, female, or what.
A few questions that pop into my mind at this early stage are:
What are the geometry specifications for the various options (baseball, softball, adult, child, male, female)?
What are the grading requirements, pitcher’s mound, cross slope min/max?
How should we handle surface and sub-surface drainage, tiles, etc?
Other thoughts?
Thanks, Brad
Brad,
There's a lot of info online and retailed for standard designs.
Trouble is, there are lots of "standards". I layed a soccer field out (back in the late eighties) per the 'approved' plans, supplied by the A&E firm. The field got built.
When the Olympic Inspectors came a week before the event to verify everything, it was not to spec. Lots of scrambling to rework things in a few short days.
I agree - be sure to get ALL the design details ahead of time.
I had a colleague whose company helped design the biathalon course for the Salt Lake City games. They designed it, staked out the course, and the course was built.
Then the olympic inspectors arrived, and informed them that the course was too long because they had not factored in the width of the snowpack on the course altering the length of the course...
The dimensions for a field need to be looked at for each base.
Home plate references the back point of the plate.
First and Third bases relate to the front leading edge of each bag.
Second base relates to the center of the bag.
Verify this, as it has been over 10 years since I laid one out…
I think first and third are set on the foul line in fair territory and centered on the baseline to second.:-)
Not sure I agree that "Recreational Use of Land Above Hazardous Waste Containment Areas" is a good resource for layout. Found a number of items I think are miss-stated.
Actually for first and third bases, the bags are on the foul lines, and within the base-length dimension. So it is the back outside corner of the bag being the reference point.
You are correct, but I always though it to be odd.
I would be wise to be sure you are clear on what the expected positional tolerance is for all lay out. On athletic facilities they can be pretty tight. I worked on a project laying out a high school track that was checked by the athletic surveyors, they called us out over 0.02'.
Thank You FLS (FORREST SEGUIN) !
Thank you Forrest for the separate e-mail with the dwg files attached.
And thanks to all for replying so far.
I would still very much appreciate someone directing me to some sort of "official source" for field design specifications?
