I got to take a look at one of these (sealed) today and it looks like a real nice combination of screen size and hard keys.?ÿ Curious if anyone has been using them yet??ÿ If so, what are your thoughts?
I wonder how big of a difference there is in weight & how it affects leveling up with a pole? With the clamp is it offset that much less from the pole than a TSC7? I know my older Yuma 2 w/ pole clamp & real short RAM mount is sometimes heavy/lopsided feeling so I have set it up to be placed inside the bipod's legs with the level vial just to the left/backside of the screen. It works better but I was on a MAG nail the other day while in an active street that had plenty of grade & I had to set the legs to the downgrade side to keep it balanced
It was very light actually; the TSC7 is a brick compared to this.?ÿ In fact, I think the guy told me the TSC5 is even lighter than the TSC2.
@bstrand wow thanks for that I didn't know
I have not but I want to for all the reasons you mentioned. Tired of the TSC7 brick...
@ncsudirtman:?ÿ Don't you always set the two legs on the downhill side?
At least with a transit or total station that's the way I was taught.
@ncsudirtman my bet is it uses the same pole mount as the TSC7. Trimble likes to re-use accessories when possible.
It really looks cool.
I agree it's safer for the equipment but not always the easiest to deal with when setup in a compromising location
Trimble sent out a questionnaire a while back asking their customers about data collector screen sizes and other features. Looks like they listened to their customers.
I did a ton of testing with it prior to releasing it for sale.?ÿ It is much lighter than the TSC7... Slightly lighter than the TSC3.?ÿ It is easily viewable in the sun, even with polarized sunglasses.?ÿ (Hitting on BushAxe's thread, I wear Costas)?ÿ It charges quickly and the internal battery lasts all day.?ÿ It has the capability of adding a second battery too. It is also verified with AT&T and Verizon, so you should have no issue with getting a SIM card for cell comms.
There are only two issues I have found that detract from it.?ÿ If you have a computer with a USB-C lightning port, it may or may not connect to your computer.?ÿ That is easily fixed by using a USB-A to USB-C cable. The other issue is that if you use the Google Workplace and set the TSC5 up with it, you will have problems.?ÿ It seems that if you set up with Google's system, you are restricted from side loading apps.?ÿ Since Trimble does not allow Access to be in the Play Store, you cannot load it.?ÿ Not sure how much of an issue this is with you guys though.?ÿ
All in all, if I was still in the field I would love it!
Full disclosure, I work for a Trimble dealer.?ÿ I am not a salesman though and am only giving my own opinion after working with the TSC5 for a few weeks.?ÿ I would, and have, told close friends the same thing.
?ÿ
P.S. - If you are using Trimble Access 2020.x or newer, use the Copy job files to function instead of copying the job, jxl, and related file folder from the data collector over to your computer.?ÿ It works MUCH better and leads to much fewer issues.
Also, be aware that the TSC5 will not run the SX series instruments...not quite enough processing power for the scans.
It is super light, and I do like that. We are switching to half 5s and half 7s at our offices. The 5 is working great for fast-moving construction staking, while the 7 is ideal for busy topo work with integrated scans, where that big screen is really needed.
The other issue is that if you use the Google Workplace and set the TSC5 up with it, you will have problems. It seems that if you set up with Google's system, you are restricted from side loading apps. Since Trimble does not allow Access to be in the Play Store, you cannot load it. Not sure how much of an issue this is with you guys though.
I'm not sure how this collector and google workspace work together but I do use google workspace to manage my business email.?ÿ I guess I'll have to figure it out when the time comes.?ÿ ????
The salesman did warn me about it not being good enough for scan work, but scanning isn't something I do at the moment so I wasn't too worried about that.?ÿ That's really the only drawback I've heard about so far.?ÿ I have an appointment to demo one on Monday.
With regards to the SX series, I think (but cannot prove) there is a conflict where Android will not handle scan files (at least Trimble scan files) properly.?ÿ?ÿ
@bstrand?ÿ I have never used workspace.?ÿ Can you still log into Gmail without adding the device to the "domain", or is it all or nothing??ÿ?ÿ
There is a workaround.?ÿ You can have two different logins, but the files in the non-workspace login are supposedly not available under the workspace enabled login.?ÿ You can always use Trimble's Sync Manager to send the files back and forth to the office.?ÿ The only caveat to that is that you have to keep the software maintenance up to date.
Oh, I don't have a TSC5 yet so I haven't been able to experiment with how they work together.?ÿ Google workspace is just an email admin service from what I can tell.?ÿ There is a separate animal called google domains that can host any domains you own (I own the .net and .com of my business name) and allows you to manage them.?ÿ So basically google domains is hosting my domains and google workspace lets me to use them to create email addresses for myself or any of my employees.
If I open the gmail app I can click a button to toggle between any of my google email addresses.?ÿ I don't remember having to link any device to a domain.?ÿ I simply log into gmail with the appropriate username and password on any device and it works as intended.
Maybe there are some file sharing features in google workspace that I am not aware of and that is what's buggy?
Sometimes, sometimes not.?ÿ I don't get caught up in that stuff - mostly try to avoid roots and rocks, and the feet go where they fit.?ÿ
But I straddle legs sometimes too.?ÿ I'm a damn rebel
@ncsudirtman it is much lighter than the TSC7 and slightly lighter than the TSC3.
We just purchased one last week and are now purchasing five more company wide. Lighter than the TSC3 even with the larger bracket and the Android OS is much better than the Windows 10 on the TSC7. Thought about trading the TSC7 in the we purchased less the 6 months ago but ouch the trade-in value was horrible!
