I just ordered a custom machine to replace my father's clunker.

AMD FX-8150 8 core, 3.6 GHZ
16 GB DDR3 1600 mhz PC3-12800
ATI Radeon HD5770 1GB Dual DVI HDMI
90 GB SSD SATA 2.5

I cannot wait to see it in action.

Probably the most noticeable piece of that will be the SSD. My laptop has an SSD but previously had a regular HDD. You can have a screamin' machine and the HDD will always hold you back. The SSD manages to keep up. Just remember that the life of the SSD will be much shorter than a typical HDD.

Thank you, I was not aware of the life span, just the benefits. I will have to plan accordingly.

No problem. Since it has no movable parts, it's similar to a rewriteable DVD because each write to the disk wears it down a tiny bit more.

Never defrag an SSD. There is no benefit and the process uses up those limited read/write events in large batches.

I had similar questions, Bill.
I thought at first that he may have been talking about a car, but then I don't know if Wendell knows that much about cars, so I figured he was talking about some kind of computer
I can't be sure, though.
I guess the category gives us a clue.:-S

My Win 7-64 with a ssd goes from off to ready for my password in 15 sec. I only use the ssd for OS files. All data goes on two traditional hard drives setup in a RAID. I also created an image of the ssd drive on an external drive once all software and settings were configured. This will allow me to quickly bring my computer back to life after a failure of the ssd drive or wipe it and start over after a virus infection.

we have been too busy and just entered into a partnership, 50/50 sort of. you know him, he cannot make things simple. he will continue for at least a year, but he plans to take more vacations. he's in vegas now learning more about poker.
he will never fully retire (does any surveyor?) but he does want more time to play.

no to the HD, everything is on a server so why bother with the individual storage?
