I leave my computers running all the time and when I turned the screen on this morning on my main cad workstation there is a blue screen with "Welcome to Windows 10" in the upper left with "user" under it, lower left has "I'm not user" and on the lower right it has "next", does this mean that MS installed Windows 10 on my computer without me giving them permission to? I have been x'ing out of the upgrade.

I am on another computer typing this as I did not want to press next unless I have to and then try to uninstall or is there another chance to get out of it, like "are you sure you want to upgrade"?

I am dead in the water til I get this figured out.

Thanks,
Edward KIllough, NCPLS

Looks like there's still a way out. Read this link: http://www.infoworld.com/article/3029613/microsoft-windows/new-details-emerge-about-forced-windows-10-upgrade-and-how-to-block-it.html

I own a license of Carlson Survey 2008. I installed it on my new Windows 10 laptop last night. After a long session of it sounding like it is chewing up the DVD it finally installed then I did the internet register which worked almost instantly. So far it runs really well but I haven't really wrung it out.

My wife's desktop computer is still on Windows 7; it keeps bugging us to upgrade but so far I haven't done it.

Seems like this is happening to a few more people now, as I have read about it on more then one place. I was originally reluctant to install some blocking software, but I did not read anything bad about the GWX control panel, so I installed it on my machines. It blocks the win 10 downloading, and nag screens. Win 10 was probably getting ready on my machine, and GWX said it found something like 7 gig on Win 10 files. I cleaned and deleted them all. Win 10: Maybe someday, but now now.

I tried to clone up from 128Gb SSD to a 500GB SSD and something went wrong and neither disk would boot. So I decided to just reinstall from the original Win7 Pro disk on the 500 Gb SSD. Since I was looking at reinstalling all software I decided to just go to Win 10 Pro. The upgrade went fine.

I've got almost all software going and not really having much problem. I've installed TerraModel, TBC, Quickbooks Pro. Adobe Creative Cloud, Microstation and everything works fine. I even found a driver that will run a 20 year old HP 600 DesignJet. The only unresolved issue at this time is activating the license for a old MicroStation (2007), might need to call Bentley on that one. Win 10 Pro seems fine to me, not all that much change from Win 7 Pro.

Since 01/16/16 I have been all Win 10, all the time. I waited until my Lenovo Thinkpad would accept the upgrade, kind of a sacrificial lamb sort of thing - not wanting to brick my main office machine. Both machines have AMD processors W/ SSD drives. The only glitch was the on-board graphics on the desktop's Gigabyte motherboard. Had to buy a video card, which was in the works anyway.

I gotta say I'm happy with the transition. Not sure how I'd like it without ClassicShell, though. ALL of my creaky old software still works, better than in Win 7, even. You need to shut off a bunch of the nosey stuff MS sneaks on there, but it's pretty straightforward once you know where to look.

YMMV,

SS

My main concern is finding a driver for my HP 5si laser printer that I use to plot 11x17 drawings, I think all my other software should run in 10 as I have been trying to update everything over the last year or so.

Is anyone having any problems with 10 and 7 on the same network talking to each other?

Thanks,
Ed

Thanks Stephen, I declined the EULA and was able to go back to Win 7 Pro.

I had a similar problem. I did a BUNCH of work last night. Must have not hit save, as I was tired.
Woke this morning, and UPDATES had installed last night, and I had lost a bunch of my work. I went to settings, and told it to DOWNLOAD updates, BUT LET me decide when to install.
Somehow, this computer managed to get it'self back to that setting, install updates, and reboot at 3:00 am.
I hate that. Let me decide when. Don't do it for me.

I guess you didn't get the memo that Mother Microsoft knows best. Knows what you want and when/ how you want it. Mother Microsoft tell YOU, not the other way around..... :pissed:

If you go to Settings>PC Settings>Network & Internet>Wi-Fi>Advanced options>Set as metered connection>On

MS will think your connection is throttled somehow and wait until you say "go" to download updates.................................I think.

If you connect to multiple networks/routers, you must do this for each.

Yep, I use those same settings, and MS must have 'fixed' them with an update because I know I had to go back and change that setting on at least 2 machines recently.

Look into the:

HP Universal Print Driver for Windows

Just about runs every HP printer/Plotter.

I also woke up to Windows 10. I never authorized it. This seems pretty aggravating. I did not know that Microsoft could do that to us against our will.

Stephen, have you installed Win 10 yet? I'm gonna wait until you do so when I install it I can bug you with questions. 😉

I'm fooling around with "Mint" but haven't had the time to really get into it.

The GWX Control panel mentioned above has done a good job on my machines of preventing this from happening. I've been using it since last year.

It is available at:

I have all of mine on Win10 with only minor issues but I'm not a good example. I keep most of my software updated including AutoCAD and Carlson so I didn't expect any major issues. I had to move my HP all-in-one laserjet to the HP universal driver and AutoCAD refuses to print directly to my DesignJet 800. I almost always plot to pdf then from Acrobat to the plotter so I took me several months to notice that particular issue.

Has anyone read the EULA? I was able to revert back to 7 by declining the EULA. I have read somewhere that 10 is going to be the last number for windows and all future updates will be made to it. Has it been announced what MS's plan is for charging for 10 after they get as many computers converted as they can. I would suspect it is going to be like AutoCad where you pay a yearly subscription to use it.
