I bought a Windows 10 laptop last weekend. It took a day to get it setup but now it works great. I installed Carlson Survey 2008 with no issues.

My wife's Windows 7 desktop keeps bugging us. I'm for it but for the same reasons that Jim in Az has had, I'm reluctant, if it's a disaster it'll be my fault, of course.

Thanks, Stephen. That did it. Now something is causing my I-backup offline storage not to work. I guess it is a firewall filter in the new Windows 10.

Peter, Thanks for the article.

While I do believe that Windows 10 will ultimately be an improvement over our Windows 7 operating system at my firm, the sudden, unauthorized installation of it caused down time with our backup system and other software unexpectedly, right when we were starting our day at the office with deadlines to meet using our software, some of which was rendered useless at a critical time of the morning to meet schedules. Even as late as Friday afternoon, I recognized a glitch with the Carlson Hydrology package--Windows 10 interface having to do with registration issues. Luckily, Saturday Carlson Software got right on it and showed me what to do. Had it not been for that, Windows 10 would have caused us to lose overtime work this weekend to meet a deadline Monday. Our data backup system is still down.

Well, for the first time in months, I started up my win10 machine. Have been battling for the past half hour with trying to simply copy something to a flash drive. Right clicking and attempting to chose copy appears to be causing windows explorer to crash.

I seem to be able to copy the files using the keyboard commands.

I might have a virus on another computer, have not figured that out yet.

You may have thought of this already, but I would make sure you have all the latest updates. There's been some rather big (in terms of fixes and security) updates in the last several weeks, so it's probably worth checking.

Yes, I thought of it, thank you. I actually attempted to download the said updates. No go. I am about to try again to see if they will download after the just performed reboot (which, in the past, has tended to solve numerous issues, right?)

update already: downloading updates does Not look promising. At all. Again. Downloading updates remaining at 0%.

Time to do another internet search for yet another windows issue.... Yes, last night, I switched my wireless connection to non metered.

Here's something to try:

It might also be a good idea to open an elevated command prompt (Start > type "cmd" > right-click on "Command Prompt" > select "Run as Administrator") then run the following commands:

Scan the filesystem

sfc /scannow

Scan the Windows image for health issues

dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

Check the Windows image for file corruption

dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth

Restore problems with the Windows image

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

This last command will assume you have a Windows image on your computer to work from. If not, it may take some doing to get this to work.

Well, I found something that seems to have worked for the moment:

I found a solution to my problem when Windows would search for updates, but then when it started downloading it would stay at 0% forever. I started by stopping the Windows Update service (in my case the service proved to be frozen so I restarted my computer and disabled the service before it starts) and the Application Experience service. After that I went to the C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution folder and pressed ctrl+a and shift+delete to empty its contents. Mine contained more than 70,000 files so it took a while. I started Application Experience and enabled Windows Update. I let it check for updates and try to download them. It worked perfectly.Do not worry about deleting important windows files in this case. The contents of SoftwareDistribution is used as a cache and data for Windows Update. When Windows Update starts again it rebuilds the cache repopulating it with up-to-date versions of the files and chewing up a ton of harddisk space again.

Updates seem to have downloaded and installing. Sitting at 20% for the moment.

Pleasant when fixes are fairly easy.

Still working on my other computer's issue. Avast virus protection keeps blocking some "plugin.exe" files from running. I'm guessing it has something to do with a virus, but can not confirm it yet. It could be an issue with Avast as far as I know.

IMVHO, Avast acts the same way a trojan works. It takes over everything on your computer and cripples how it operates.

I installed Malewarebytes Anti-Maleware and it does a good job with a regular dose of Super Anti-Spyware and operate totally thru wifi only, no hardwires to computers.

I started using Avast and AVG to get away from Norton and McAfee which are both pretty bad (imo) these days.

I have had issues with both Avast and AVG over the years and am open to new possibilities, so thank you for the suggestion.

Yep, I'm not a fan of Avast (anymore).

When trying to remove pests from a computer, I rely pretty heavily on these guys, because they are awesome:

I do like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, however it rarely finds anything even when the two above do. There is another tool from Malwarebytes that most folks aren't aware of, and I install it whenever anyone asks for help:

I dropped Avast several years ago when it let a major bad thing install right behind it.

My ISP provides Kaspersky which works reasonably well.

In Windows 10, I have no third party antivirus or antimalware software installed. Didn't have any in 8.1 either. I only use this other stuff for friends and family in need, most of whom are running Windows 7.
